Childrens' winter coats (I know I know)...

Looking at sites for general outdoorsy things for our approaching camping holiday I have started thinking about the annual winter coat purchase for DS1.

I say only DS1 because his coats get passed down to DS2 then DN1 and 2 (if still serviceable).

He's nearly 8. Is £70 too much to spend do you think? I've seen a nice one for that price. We live rurally, spend a lot of time outdoors in all weathers.

How much is too much to spend? How much do you spend?

Well in all honesty, i wouldnt spend that much but i can appreciate that you live rurally and may want something more technical and you will pass it down so i suppose you can justify it really.. I dont mind so much getting my daughter more pricey clothes as i know she can pass it on to her younger sister. If it were me..my upper limit for my children would be about £35

Questions to ask yourself are ...will he take care of it? Could he lose it at school? [ many do - i have seen the lost property at school] Could it get stolen?

I have to say, my dd is very untidy and slings everything everywhere without a passing thought about cost.

Actually i bought my ds two coats today..a parka for winter, lovely and thick and fleece lined..he is 6 and another one more sporty and technical looking, for when he is older at the grand total cost of £15!!! - that was for both!!! [ bargain out of Matalan!]

DD's coat last winter was marked at £75. It was a proper waterproof raincoat though, with a zip-out fleece, and will last her this winter as well (bought a size up). I got it more than half off as it was previous season, so it only cost £30. She is 2, & we walk everywhere as don't have a car.

I wouldn't.

You can get decent waterproof coats for half that.

But if you like it and can afford it, who cares what I think? Wink

DS1 is super careful. DS2… not so much! It's unlikely to get nicked as it's not showy or a 'label'.

I like the cut of your jib LegoCaltrops . That's a nice mark down. Grin

We've done a Boden coat the last 3 years; the first one is ace and still going strong but I have noticed a real decline in quality since. His one from last year will just about see DS2 but not the others.

We need waterproof but really warm too.

We can afford it at the moment! But something about spending £70 on one item for a child sort of chafes.

Thanks all! Flowers

I get good coats like Trespass from TK Maxx at a fraction of the price. Might be worth a look?

Gap winter coats come out soon. They always have a 30% off voucher weekend in Sept and if you buy 4 items+, another 10% off instore. I have been buying coats for my dc in this way for the last few years!

I bought dd1 a fantastic little coat from Boden three years ago and it still fits her now. Thick and padded with a padded hood and detachable sleeves so she can also wear it as a body warmer. It's a brilliant little coat, cost me about £40 iirc, so imagine my joy when I discovered they're doing them again this year!

If you're going to spend money on anything in this country, spend it on a child's coat, for god's sake. It will make the difference to his wellbeing for about 8 months of the year!

People spend that on dinner without batting an eyelid.

I spent £35 on a light, warm, totally waterproof coat for DD who was 1 at the time and I was glad of every penny every time I used it.
