Longer shorts for my teenage dd

sweetheart · 22/07/2014 15:50

Dd is a bit of a tom boy and is in desperate need of some shorts. She prefers the longer style and wouldn't be seen dead in anything most teenage girls would wear. She likes surfer style shorts but they are so expensive and she will grow out of them in a year.

She found some in fat face which were ok but again £35!!! I'm just not willing to spend that much on shorts for her.

She's 14 so can fit into adult clothes now. I've tried everywhere I can think of (even the boys bits of stores) She will wear boys clothes but only if they don't look too boyish Hmm can you see my frustration here..........

Any help with longer good value shorts would be great....

My dd used to be the same (now she likes short shorts Hmm) but she used to wear the boys' long shorts they sell in H & M every year. They are unbranded/generic and pretty unisex and do different colours (sort of sweatshirt material I think or the cotton ones without the belt were fine) - purple and the brighter blue were usually acceptable to her! I think they cost around a fiver so couldn't go too far wrong.

Some of the camping/outdoor shops do longer shorts for women - if she wants kind of outdoorsy looking ones. Or shops that mainly have older shoppers - eg M&S may do women's shorts in longer styles.

Or if she has some old jeans that are a bit tatty, you can cut them down to any length you like. Same with leggings if you know how to hem them.

At 14, chances are she won't grow out of them in a year, my 16y still wears stuff she's had for years.

Shorts are an unmitigated pain if your DD isn't stick thin and into hot pants, I have one 12-14 and one size 8 teen DD and feel your pain. DD1 got some passable length shorts in New look yesterday, but they are denim and distinctly teen.

Your best bet is to scour outdoor shop and web places like Surfdome's sales, but it can be a real hunt.

(I'm a size 16+ and shorts are the bain of my existence, I steal DH's)

Ds1 has bright blue andpurple shorts fromh&m that would be fine. Or she could do what I do for my 9 yrold dd and unpick the rolled up legs of shorts for girls. Dd has got denim andkhaki shorts this year (morrisons and somewhere else cant remember) thst are both a decent length now I have undone the stitches on the roll up legs.
try sports direct for surf shorts.

I bought some men's shorts from Fatface last year and they're the first shorts I've had for years.

They come down to my knees and are so comfy and quite smart.

Chino-style, one pair in navy and one in mid-blue. I love them.

Have a look on M and M Direct. I bought my DDs the longer style board shorts from there and they're quite cheap

Thanks for the recommendations. I've ordered every suitable pair from H&M - the shop has been a godsend in the past but this year it's lacking which has been a real let down. We are going to a Gap outlet at the weekend so hopefully there will be some suitable for her there.

We tried Primark at the weekend but nothing suitable in there - all seemed to be denim hot pants.

Will have a hunt round some camping wear places...

My DSD sounds similar. Last year I got her men's shorts from Primark (plain blue chino style, knee length) in a size 28 and she loved them.

those Next chino's look great but unfortunately sold out Sad We tried all the shorts in primark at the weekend - womens, girls, boys and mens! Unfortunately the mens ones didn't fit her quite right.

I've made some longer shorts from cheap chino type trousers from primark etc on the past- much cheaper than many pairs of shorts and I was able to get the perfect length. Just used some wundaweb and a few stitches as I'm a bit lazy with sewing Sad

M & M Direct do a lot of sporty/surfy wear and deliver very quickly.

Ok, M&S have these bad boys, although running low on sizes. If she's partial to black or light blue you might be alright!
