Haircut for a classic gamine?

Wigeon · 27/12/2013 20:17

I've been diagnosed by a House of Colour consultant as being a classic gamine, and am now wondering whether my hairstyle is the best one. Hair at the moment is a bob with fringe pretty much like this (although less shiney), slightly tapered up at the back.

But the obvious gamine hairstyle is the pixie cut, and I'm not sure if I could carry it off. I have big eyes, but also a nose that is on the large, rather than petite, side, and big lips. Any advice?

A pic would help. But whatever you do,do not go getting a certain type of cut based on a HoC 'style diagnosis'

I wouldn't get your hair cut just yet, play with the style a bit clothes-wise to see if you even like it. I'm deliberately not doing the HoC style day because I'm really feeling uncomfortable about it all. Had my colours done a while ago and still bucking against the make-up recs. To have to cut my hair a certain way would be a step too far this early on. Maybe in a few months if you can adopt the gamine style clothes-wise then go the whole hog. The pixie cut is a very harsh look on the wrong face (IMHO) I would think one would need very 'fine' features as there is nowhere to hide Grin

Photo now on profile...

Don't worry, TripTrap, I absolutely am not going to get a haircut because of the HoC. No no no. I'm going to ask a bunch of strangers on the internet instead!! Sultry - I actually did the HoC thing months and months ago (maybe over a year ago?), and they were definitely spot on with my colours. I didn't do anything related to make up: I don't wear a huge amount of make up, although she did say navy / charcoal eye liner rather than brown, and silver, lilac etc eyeshadow, rather than bronzes, all of which again definitely work on me.

I think the "classic gamine" thing is actually just tweaking what I am already drawn to - cut out the casual combats etc, look neat and tidy, and again, it does work for me. And I'm not taking the whole thing too seriously anyway. But I generally always feel my haircut is too boring / doesn't suit me, so I'd been wondering if I could use the suggestion of gamine to do something with my hair which would suit me better. Rather than feeling dictated to by HoC.

Any suggestions based on my photo welcome!

I can't see your profile, but I had my hair cut from a bob with a fringe to a pixie last year and it is the best thing I have ever done. I look tons better and get loads of compliments, plus it takes minutes to get ready in the mornings.

I asked on here before doing it and everyone said no, don't do it. I did it anyway, then when I showed the "after" photo on here everyone agreed it looked better Grin

I think longer hair would really suit you.

Really? I did have longer hair (bit below shoulder) when I was younger and I always felt it looked a bit of a mess, and just hung there (I have quite a lot of hair, but it's quite fine). And didn't ever look all glossy and swishy like a shampoo ad!

Your hair looks quite short already and gamines are supposed to have a fringe so you are almost there I think.

I would go a bit shorter next time you have it cut - maybe google pixie haircuts for more ideas of what to ask for.

I have not been on a style day but I do know that they take into account your facial features, body shape, personality and lifestyle and that it is a much more thorough analysis than when doing colours.

I agree with Emo and think longer hair would suit you.I can't imagine you with a pixie cut tbh

Thank you for replies! Any other opinions welcome (if only to create a consensus that longer hair is better!).

Thanks for replies. A consensus is forming...Think I need to find an old picture of when I did have longer hair, and see if I did look a mess. I just seem to remember it just hanging there, rather than looking like Catherine Zeta Jones/ Duchess of Cambridge / other brunette with lovely longer hair...

I disagree, I think you'd look fab with a pixie!

I don't think you have to have small features for short hair, just features that you're happy to accentuate. I'm not saying you look like Judi Dench but she's a great example of short hair complementing strong features. You have great eyes / smile so why not show them off.

Thank you! Just a bit worried I'd be all nose and eyes if I had a short cut, and not in a good way. Impossible to know really, without doing it!

There must be websites where you can upload a photo and it shows you what you'd look like with different haircuts...will google....

I think you look really pretty the way it is now (unhelpful)
I had a pixie cut myself last year, loved it, however am easily bored, and growing it out is painful

In fact I was on your thread Jemima and I said a definite yes do it!

JemimaMuddledUp · 01/01/2014 20:41

Well you were definitely right ninah Grin

In all fairness there were a couple of people who said yes, but the vast majority said no.

Actually, now I can see your picture I am still saying yes to a pixie. Not too short and still with a fringe, I think it would look great. You have strong features which would be really emphasised by short hair. My eyes look huge with short hair, and I have defined cheekbones which disappear when it is longer.

Yes to the crop here too. I quite like the Michelle Williams crop posted upthread but think you should go for height on top as well as layers. Keep your fringe and sides layered amd on your face.

And a bit more makeup to counteract the boyishness of the style.

Hm, the votes have swung the other way now! Thanks v much for comments. ninah - yes, definitely a pain growing out a pixie cut! Also the need for v frequent haircuts to keep it looking trim. TravelinColour - I like your pictures with a bob too, as it looks very well kept and neat unlike mine.
