Hair breakage at hairline

rootypig · 24/10/2013 04:20

I have noticed in the last month that my hair has broken a good bit at the hairline. There are wispy bits an inch or two long sort of above my temples - where men's hair often starts to recede.

I am white with long thick hair that I often tie up. Actually almost all the time. Including in bed. I have stopped that now, but what else can I do? I am really conscious of it!

I am 30 so hopefully too young for the damn stuff to be falling out. Had a child a year ago if that tallies with anyone's experience.

Hellllllllllllp

It's really normal - it's not breakage either - it's just wee new baby hair growth. Happened to me with all my kids. I am exactly the same, right down to long hair always tied back.
No one else will have noticed, but I always notice it more when I'm post partum Grin

Oh prissy hope! but are you sure? I didn't notice a difference in my hair at all during pregnancy and bfing. No hair loss. It's now that it looks like it's thinning?

God is punishing me for joking about my husband's hair falling out Grin

Lol, maybe we are just glass half full/ empty people?! Either way, it won't be as noticeable soon - and I bet no one else is noticing x

I am inspecting obsessing and I think it goes too far back into the hair to be what you describe. About an inch square patch. If it hadn't been there before I definitely would have noticed! My hair is about the only part of my body that I like!

and yep i was super paranoid that i looked like I was balding - it was right where you describe. Now I'm trying to work out how to deal with the fuzzy patches until it looks normal again. Sigh

Thank you for being reassuring and humouring me. My diet is absolute crap at the moment so I should sort that out before moaning just off out to get ice cream. I am going to buy some Mane n Tail shampoo, originally for horsies but I've heard it's ace Grin

Apparently it's very normal. Your hair doesn't fall out so much (from the usual falling out) while pregnant (so feels all thick and lovely) but then does a lot of falling out just after the birth and then starts to regrow.
I remember feeling lots of stubbly re growth bits all over and noticing I had a new wispy fringe after both of my babies.

Did you used to tie your hair back very tightly? There is something called traction alopecia, caused by putting strain on the roots. It's why ballet dancers who wear their hair in tight buns sometimes have a slightly receding hairline. It should correct itself.

Mmm. I'd check if you're getting enough vitamins then. Or have you had a big shock or event in the past 3-4 months or so? Have you got ridges on your nails either horizontal or vertical as that can indicate a change in vitamin levels?

Not that tightly, Maud, not scraped back, just a loose bun, but almost all the time and when sleeping, so I think it could have contributed. I wear it down 50% of the time now (as of about two weeks ago Confused) and always at night. But ugh I am impatient and I bet it will only grow back about five seconds before I have another baby

Apparently black women who get weaves (as they are also prone to this) tie silk scarves around their heads at night. This appeals but DH would prob think I have lost the plot Grin

maisie diet is shocking but I do eat a lot of eggs so at least getting protein. right??? Nails look fine if unpleasantly ragged. It's been a stressful year, that cannot be denied.

Ok so so far I have:
loose locks
horse shampoo
vitamins
silk scarf
chill the fuck out Grin

All other suggestions welcome!

A silk scarf could be very glamorous, a la stars of the silver screen.

I seem to remember that B vitamins are good for hair and they tend to get depleted with lots of stress - so maybe try topping those up. (Disclaimer: I am by No means an expert and probably talk rubbish most of the fine).

Although if you're hair is growing back now, that hopefully means you're through the stressful bit and getting back to normality - if such a thing exists after having children.

I defo talk rubbish all the time too maisie

This is the thing - I am not sure if the hair is growing back, or breaking! does that make sense?

Maud I am so unglamorous, perhaps this is my chance to up my game for DH Grin

Maybe a silk peignoire, then, to match the scarf?

Report
rootypig · 24/10/2013 07:50

That would probably arouse suspicion. Rosie Huntington Whiteley I am not. Though a silk scarf will probably look strange with a manky old food stained t shirt

I don't even know where to buy a silk scarf! Grin

Hmm. The fact that RHW's name trips off your tongue suggests you are really a fashion maven.

I am a fashion maven in the sense that my dad always thinks I look like I've fallen out of a dumpster. And that was before I had a child Confused Silk doesn't come into it.

I am a Daily Mail addict though Blush

Ah.

Is the dumpster you inhabit anywhere near a John Lewis. They have lovely scarves, as do Liberty if you want to splurge.
