Understatedly sexy for day-to-day

How? What sort of outfit would that mean to you? I'm (obviously) not talking high heels and plunging necklines, and I don't mean looking knockout every day either, rather moving away from jeans and verging-on-studenty outfits into grown-up, wearable subtlety - for a SAHM, not office wear.

Any ideas?!

Interesting you use the word 'sexy'! Lots of people post on here wanting to look 'well put together' or 'trendy' or 'not mumsy' but wanting to look sexy on a daily basis, while quite a reasonable wish, isn't a usual S and B request Grin

I guess details like having polished nails, a bit of makeup and hair blowdried works - of course feeling sexy is about how you feel so whatever makes you feel good. Natural fabrics, well-fitting underwear, that kind of thing.

Stuff to avoid would be trainers, poorly fitting jeans (skinnies with ballerinas = sexy) or anything overly patterned and mumsy. Mumsy means lots of things but I think mostly it's the antithesis of sexy. Dress simply and comfortably in clothes that you don't mind getting covered in banana/snot.

Silk drapey tops and blouses with skinny trousers, showing ankles, wrists and neck.

YoniOno Interesting reply! Made me think about how often men and women appear to have vastly differing ideas of what constitutes 'sexy'. Kind of fascinating subject.

I recall a Pinterest set which I was fond of, featuring outfits and styles that I would personally have described as both chic and sexy, but after showing it to a male friend he just looked puzzled. Asked him what his impressions were and he said 'they all look so harsh'.

Now, lord knows what he meant by that, but I thought they looked dazzling! I think his impression of sexy involves a pretty shirt frock with boots and loose hair, a sort of carefree femininity (whatever the f*ck that actually means). My impression of sexy involves black jeans, cropped jackets and heels - not sure i suit that look myself though!

For me, a shirt tucked into a pencil skirt, eyes and eyebrows smudgily done but nothing else, hair loosely up. Earrings only. A good bra. And if you want to feel like a complete fox, stockings/holdups underneath it all.

I read an article about this recently. They talked about 3 piece dressing - think Elle McPherson, Stella McCartney, Gwyneth Paltrow.

  • Skinny jeans, maybe even leather trousers.
  • Good quality knit tshirt, round neck or high V
  • Blazer or tuxedo jacket

Wear with ballet flats, ankle boots or a pointy toed mid heel. Big sunglasses. No statement necklace, no scarves.

Apparently this is the epitome of chic, and pretty mindless when it comes to getting dressed if you keep everything in the same colour palette.

I agree with blouse. Semi fitted with a bit of movement. Not too many accessories and slim bottom half. Loose clean natural hair

It depends on your figure as well. Someone tall and straight up and down can look sexy in a pair of black skinny jeans and slouchy mens shirt with a lacy vest just peeking out. Someone with an hour class shape might look better in a dress.
I think full make up (including lipstick, eyeliner etc) and a hair style that suits you is a must. And painted nails.

Oh and Zara do some lovely blouses in a sort of silk material, they look really expensive and rather sexy (i think anyway,i'm a recent convert to Zara after being too scared to go in for years!)
