Frugal Fashion, with links

cheeseandchive · 09/03/2013 23:12

In the spirit of the original Frugal Fashion thread (see here), this is for those of us who want to make the most of what we've got and spend carefully.

Hopefully this will be a thread where we can share links to support our ideas/opinions/examples, with the purpose of helping each other spend our money more wisely.

For those of us that want to, we can flick between this thread and the original and the two can work together!

To kick things off, here's a link to Hopefully's blog (linking here instead of the other thread because it contains some brand names and prices). She's an expert long-term planner and the antithesis of an impulse shopper, so we all might learn something from her.

Good one cheese. I've written a list of the 8 items I need to sort my wardrobe out till Christmas so that's what I'm going to use this thread for. And am not going to buy anything else. In order of importance, too Grin
denim shirt
nude silk shirt
tankini
khaki shorts
wool/boucle chanel type jacket
leopard pumps
gray jersey blazer
sequin jacket.

And that will see me right through. I have a list but that's where I go wrong, I get so confused about what type of denim shirt I should buy - light blue, dark indigo, fitted or baggy style, round hem, straight hem, heavy or light fabric. Then I go off and buy some floral monstrosity from Matalan.

Great stuff. My list is:

Tan or neutral flats (probably pointy toe as feels more current) for work
Navy slim leg work trousers
Cropped silk cotton mix cardigan
(orange or orangey red)
Tan flat sandals
Black maxi skirt
Denim short shorts

Most urgent is the work flats as returning to work soon and I haven't got anything suitable already. I've got a few contenders - if I link later I'd love your thoughts.

I need:

Black flats (leather if poss)
Black jeans (skinny and bootcut)
Basic vest tops (variety of colours, basically everything but black)
Cropped black cardi
Black maxi skirt
Black maxi dress
Red wedges/sandals

That should be enough to see me through with everything else I have

Just marking my place

So far I could do with one new triumph super soft bra. I wear no other kind so comfy

So researching cheapest place - usually they are £30 +

I've just discovered the Polyvore website and I think it's amazing to help you fill in the gaps in your wardrobe. I've added the following items to my wish list:

new pair of indigo skinnies
leopard print pumps
cream jumper
camel coat

Oooh, loving the lists!

I'm currently saving towards;

OR these fatface ones

FF are lovely but I seem to remember they go baggy at the knees.

Also, one or two of these from hush to layer.

If anyone can advise on quality/value of any of these brands, that'd be much appreciated!

Cheese I really rate fatface denim. It's good quality and fits my shape well (apple). I tried on a pair of their super soft super skinnies the other day and they were lovely on. But I don't need any more skinnies so resisted

Oh and I know Hush is popular here but I've been disappointed with the quality. A dress looked tatty quickly and a pair of knitted harems bought a couple of months ago came apart at the waistband after two washes.

Hello, can I join in? Here's my list:

Jersey biker jacket
Havaiana type flip flops in black, navy or grey
Black + tan satchel
H&M linen t-shirts in rust and black
A non-sheer white vest

Morning all

OneLittleLady have you had any luck finding a black maxi? I've only searched online so far. Mine needs to have an elasticated rather than zip waist, lightly gathered, somewhere between a tube and a maxi and with no splits. And cotton or cotton rich, or perhaps lyocell.

Ok shoes. Starting to panic a bit as need these quickly (denial about returning to work and has crept up on me).

So far I like:

Boden pointy sling backs Like the colour and the shape but leather soles which slip make me fall over. Also may be wildly impractical as I can walk a lot at work.

Dune LOVE the colour and the shape but synthetic. Although lining is leather.

dependable Clarks Will be comfy but is the shape and style a bit boring? Or is boring good, I.e. classic and the pointy toe thing will go the way of slipper flats in 2013.

Aldo Love colour and shape.

For info I wear a lot of navy to work- mainly dresses as easy. Think just above knee dresses (more 40s tea shape rather than formal shift) with cropped casual jackets. Or navy trousers and cream silky top, cropped cardigan.

I'm confusing myself now so would love some input! Thanks

Adding my list of planned puchases for April here.
These basics fill some gaps:
Gray wool silk trousers
Gray 34" leather belt
Cream mercerized cotton or cotton silk short-sleeved knit top (some other neutral color good too)

Love those shoes, Bill! Just a few thoughts to help you decide;

  • would the Clarks ones and the Boden ones go with tights? Just as they've got those cut-out bits (Clarks) and show the heel (Boden), they might well do but just wondered!
  • Also, would either of those ones be weather-proof? I like the Clarks ones but if there's an April shower might you get wet feet?!

My personal favourites are the Aldo and then the Dune.

Good point Cheese about tights and rain - hadn't considered either!

I'm leaning towards the Aldo ones. Leather with a rubber sole so non slippy (I've slipped over twice at work wearing leather soled shoes, very embarrassing!). Also do really like the pointy toe, and prefer the non patent leather.

Thanks for your help!

Woolovers has some lovely silk/cotton cardi and jumpers at very good prices. Just had 3 and they are lovely, they have a huge colour choice.

Does anyone know where I can get 50's style pointy shoes in a 35 or 35.5 and don't say M&S as I tried 4 pairs of their 35.5's on last week and they were all big !

I've been looking at maxi dresses here www.boohoo.com/restofworld/clothing/maxi-dresses/icat/maxidresses/day-dresses/sandy-scoop-neck-maxi-dress/invt/azz67456
I had a navy vest-style maxi from DP last summer and wore it a LOT and am considering another for this year in another colour, possibly orange? - BUT
a) is it necessary to get another in a different colour
b) is this going to be rubbish quality?
They also have maxi skirts here www.boohoo.com/restofworld/skirts/maxi-skirts/icat/maxi-skirts/ OneLittleLady

Have ordered the KG ones.

Went for the Aldo ones originally (with 10% off for signing up to newsletter), but site kept chucking me out so after 4th attempt gave up.

Got 25% off KG ones with Vogue25, plus free returns so will give them a go and report back.

Billstickers Re your black maxi skirt haveyou tried Planet ? but bear with me. I bought one from their sale shop for a bargainous £19.99 it is lined tis some sort of manmade fibre but is heavy and good quality so hangs exceptionally well is machine washable has an elastcated waist which means I can wear it high waisted with a white shirt tucked in al la Victoria Beckham for work or on my waist with biker jacket t-shirt and ankle boots for a casual look. For a classic item like a maxi skirt it is sometimes better to go a little off piste with your search sometimes brands known for ladies of d'un certain age can turn up a real gem and the quality is usually spot on !!! Think the Windsmoor group have a sale site called just last season or something like that but if you can get to one of their outlet stores prices are better and you get to try on. Sorry it would probably help more if I could learn to do links I'm a luddite I know !!!! Blush
