TheOtherHelenMumsnet · 19/03/2012 11:59

This thread is for the 10 Mumsnet panellists who went to the UNIQLO Undercover launch event on Saturday. Many thanks for going along to the event with your families - we hope you enjoyed it! If you'd like to take part in activities like this when they come up, please join our research panel here, if you haven't done so already.

By way of background, UNIQLO invited 10 Mumsnetters (recruited from our research panel) and their families to attend the event, where they got a sneak preview of the range before everyone else, tried on garments from the range and had a family portrait taken in their outfits. If you'd like to know more about the UNIQLO Undercover range
please click here.

This is the feedback thread for those Mumsnetters who attended to post their views on how they found the event. Please also include the views of the other members of your family who attended.

Here's a few feedback questions but these are just to start you off - if you have any more comments, please feel free to add them to your response. Everyone who adds their comments to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £150 UNIQLO online shopping voucher.

1 Overall, what did you and your family think of the UNIQLO Undercover range? What did you like about it the most? Was there anything you didn't like?

2 Of everything you saw and/or tried on from the range, what was your favourite item? And what about your DP/DC?

3 The inspiration behind the Undercover collection is the designer Jun Takahashi's message to the world, to encourage families to maintain a positive outlook as they face the trials and tribulations of modern life. Do you think the collection will help promote this ideal and set a positive example? If so, why? If not, why not?

4 If you've bought clothes from UNIQLO before (either for you/DP or DCs), what is it that you liked about the clothes that made you buy them? Do you think you?d consider buying anything from the Undercover range in future? If so, what and why? If not, why not?

5 If you've never bought anything from UNIQLO before, has attending this event changed your perception of the brand at all? If so, how? Having attended this event, do you think you?d be more likely to buy UNIQLO clothes in future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Many thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

  1. A great range of clothes, my little girl absolutely loved the stripey leggings; they have a quality feel and are lovely and soft. The caps are great for sunny days and go brilliantly with the smart cardigans with heart shaped buttons. My little boy looked so cute in the smart white shirt and shorts. The boys jacket gave him a very dapper look. All the childrens clothes mix and match fantastically. Great elasticated waists on some of shorts which is great for good fitting style.

  1. I loved the airy soft feel of the ladies top I tried on and the jeans had a great fit and nice finish with studs along the calf. I was impressed they had my size. My husband liked the blue zip up Jacket, very stylish. My favourite item has to be the girls leggings.

  1. Overall a very positive range that makes it easy to put together a smart look for all the family to face the world feeling positive about themselves.

  1. I bought clothes from Uniqlo when they first opened, I was impressed by the quality and my green fleece is still going strong. I will definitely buy from this range ( have bought my little girls outfit already- leggings and top, she loves it! ).

Thanks again, we had fun!

1 Overall, what did you and your family think of the UNIQLO Undercover range? What did you like about it the most? Was there anything you didn't like?

Well we liked it in general although some were keener than others! We liked all of the colours - it was good to see something other than black and that the children's clothes didn't necessarily go along stereotypical lines (although there was a baby pink cord skirt and a purple frock!). Liked that particularly with the children's range some of the items were unisex, although the children generally gravitated to specifically own gender items.

The clothes were funky but particularly the children's clothes were quite expensive we thought. Would only pay those prices for 'high' end itemsregardless of how funky and cute they were!. Sorry, Uniqlo, but we would never pay £29.99 for a pair of girl's shorts

Also, despite being in one of the largest branches of Uniqlo, presumably in the UK, a lot of the children's clothes weren't available in the full range of sizes. Caused a bit of a hassle when trying to sort out funky outfits for the children in particular. In fact, DS is 11 but a smallish 11 but we ended up having to kit him out in XS adult male clothes as there were no appropriate and appealing kids clothes to fit him! And DD kept picking clothes that weren't available in her sizes either! Think that needs addressing. If you made a special trip up to the West End to buy the kids clothes, you would not be happy not to find the full size-range available.

2 Of everything you saw and/or tried on from the range, what was your favourite item? And what about your DP/DC?

DS liked the funky t-shirts and the caps. He was also keen on the biker jackets but sadly they didn't have a larger size than age 3- 4 which wasn't much use for an 11 year old ;-( . DD loved the cute bubble shorts and funky leggings with clashing stripey sleeved cardigans. DW did not really think the range suited her (she has an hour glass figure) and I would tend to agree. I liked the casual jackets, manga-t-shirts and trousers.

3 The inspiration behind the Undercover collection is the designer Jun Takahashi's message to the world, to encourage families to maintain a positive outlook as they face the trials and tribulations of modern life. Do you think the collection will help promote this ideal and set a positive example? If so, why? If not, why not?

Well the colours of the clothes, I think would fit in with that message. They have a fun side to them design-wise and they are functional and funky at the same time so I guess YES!

4 If you've bought clothes from UNIQLO before (either for you/DP or DCs), what is it that you liked about the clothes that made you buy them? Do you think you?d consider buying anything from the Undercover range in future? If so, what and why? If not, why not?

Well DW has bought quite a few things from Uniqlo and prefers it to The Gap and H&M for sure. She liked that the women's clothes can be a bit quirky, that the quality is generally better than other similarly priced makes and she likes that they recycle clothes, provide a turning up service for trousers and that generally the shops are spacious and rather zen. She also likes the promos on specific items. She is however a bit confused by the sizings. She has bought me fleeces which have been well-worn and much loved, by me anyway! Often buys things for friends and siblings as pressies too.

I would be encouraged to buy things from the Undercover range if the price was right as I think I looked good in them. DS would too but not at that price for a growing lad! Wouldn't buy them for DD as she is very tall, leggy and slimline and the girls' clothes seem to be made for more sturdy children generally..... the lovely cotton dress looked fab on the hanger but looked uninspiring on as the appropriate size one hung off her like a sack of potatoes. Ditto the cord skirts (she could have fitted two of her in the waist!). DW not keen on the range for herself as she didnt' really think they suited her figure although she loved the reds and blue hues.

5 If you've never bought anything from UNIQLO before, has attending this event changed your perception of the brand at all? If so, how? Having attended this event, do you think you?d be more likely to buy UNIQLO clothes in future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Well DW has bought things from Uniqlo before. Shopping at the Oxford Street branch was interesting - it reminded me of the Benetton ads of yesteryear: a very beautiful, multicultural, happy, helpful workforce who seemingly reflected the ethos of Uniqlo excellently.

I haven't knowingly ever been into Uniqlo so was very pleasantly surprised (as a man who hates shopping) by the fun clothes and particularly liked the manga-inspired t-shirts, so I would probably make an effort to look in our local one if were are out shopping en famille.

Personally, we think there is a very much needed place for kids clothes in the Uniqlo range but we are not entirely sure that Undercover kids stuff delivered to full potential. As DW commented, DD who is usually a quirky dresser (although she played very safe on Saturday's trip), often works a similar trend to the outfit she wore for the Uniqlo photoshoot, but with a mixture of Primark, M&S, H&M, Zara and TK Maxx for possibly 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost. I think DS, as he becomes more fashion-forward (he is but a tween at the moment), will truly appreciate Uniqlo's clothes, particularly the quirky t-shirts and trousers!

Really enjoyed the opportunity to have a bit of fun and have some lovely shots of self with the kids. They also loved the Japanese sweets and doing the origami. It livened up a bit of an otherwise grim Saturday and the children particularly loved the whole thing so thank you!

1 Overall, what did you and your family think of the UNIQLO Undercover range? What did you like about it the most? Was there anything you didn't like?

We were a bit underwhelmed to be honest! DH and I struggled to find things that fitted us - I'm too curvy & he's too tall! The t shirts and cardigans were my favourites. I liked the printa but the dress and tunic tops really didn't suit me. I liked the kids clothes a lot more. Lots of lovely bright colours & quirky prints. I bought dd the stripey red leggings. they are fab. I did think it was all rather expensive for kids though. I loved the cardigan with the heart buttons but £30 is too much. she would just cover it in yoghurt and snot anyway!

2 Of everything you saw and/or tried on from the range, what was your favourite item? And what about your DP/DC?

My favourite was the stripey leggings for dd. they were comfy, cute and stylish. dh would have liked the leather jacket but they had sold out. I like the skinny capri jeans but they didn't have my size

3 The inspiration behind the Undercover collection is the designer Jun Takahashi's message to the world, to encourage families to maintain a positive outlook as they face the trials and tribulations of modern life. Do you think the collection will help promote this ideal and set a positive example? If so, why? If not, why not?

erm, maybe.. It's certainly bright & cheerful

I've always liked their clothes but have trouble finding anything to fit me. I think their sizes come up small thats what I tell myself anyway!
I have bought an anorak for me before. I love the bright colours & simple clean designs. I would buy from the uu range - its bright and colourful. stylish, cool and comfy

5 If you've never bought anything from UNIQLO before, has attending this event changed your perception of the brand at all? If so, how? Having attended this event, do you think you?d be more likely to buy UNIQLO clothes in future? If so, why? If not, why not?

We really enjoyed the event. It was nice to be able to browse the collection in peace and try on outfits for the lovely photo shoot. I'm so pleased with the lovely photos I got to take home. DD loved it! Balloons are always a winner & she enjoyed watching the older chn doing origami. We were little puzzled by the goody bag - it was a bit random! I wil definitely look in uniqlo for dd in the future when I'm looking for something a bit different

Thanks for a lovely day! Grin Grin Grin

Yes, what was it with the goodies' bags? Without meaning to sound critical, the DCs were fully anticipating a little something for them - a pair of socks or a T-shirt and were rather disappointed. Even x2 of the pass holder would have pleased them! Or a 20% off voucher against UU purchases? The goodies bags didn't really seem to correlate with range being launched at all!

No, quite agree Bellatrixrocks! DW is a seasoned veteran of all manner of clothing/perfume company PR events in the 1990s and just felt it wasn't a very targeted goodies bag and our two DCs are of an avaricious age ajd were totally sold on the whole day on the basis of the photos, the clothes and the goodies bag!

.....but sorry for looking a gift horse in the mouth as we had a lot of fun :-0

Where are all the other comments on this event?!!!

Oh and DW totally agrees with you about the women's clothes. She felt the UU line for women was not really designed for curvy women at all!

1 Overall, what did you and your family think of the UNIQLO Undercover range? What did you like about it the most? Was there anything you didn't like?

I thought the collection was very appealing, some lovely prints and fabrics. Some quirky elements when I first looked online, but they do look a lot nicer in store.

2 Of everything you saw and/or tried on from the range, what was your favorite item? And what about your DP/DC?

My husband and I didn?t try anything on (nightmare time with heat and changing room space) but my son tried on the Riders Jacket. It was made of a mix of leather and cotton and was a lovely jacket?not so keen on the price - £49.90! He loved the jacket, and we had a few tears when we couldn?t buy it at the end.

3 The inspiration behind the Undercover collection is the designer Jun Takahashi's message to the world, to encourage families to maintain a positive outlook as they face the trials and tribulations of modern life. Do you think the collection will help promote this ideal and set a positive example? If so, why? If not, why not?

I can understand the designers outlook, but think it will fit in with a more well to do family. I think a lot of trials and tribulations in life today centers around financial worries. Therefore to spend over £100 on 1 outfit for a child is not realistic.

4 If you've bought clothes from UNIQLO before (either for you/DP or DCs), what is it that you liked about the clothes that made you buy them? Do you think you?d consider buying anything from the Undercover range in future? If so, what and why? If not, why not?

I used to buy from UNIQLO before I had children, and I always remembered them as a middle of the road price range, and a lasting quality. It has been a few years since I shopped there, and 1 reason being that the areas I shop in either don?t have a store or the store is in a part of town that I don?t go past. 1 thing that we stop me buying from this range, would purely be financial?maybe I?ll wait for the sales.

Overall, I found parts of the morning a big let down. There was a huge lack of clothes, with nothing for my DD. I have to agree with everyone else, the goody bag was very strange and a huge let down for my children.

1 Overall, what did you and your family think of the UNIQLO Undercover range? What did you like about it the most? Was there anything you didn't like?
I liked it and my daughter liked it. My sons picked up clothes for which there were no sizes available for them so all they got to try on was a pair of jeans and a hoody. They loved the colours but the sizing was all wrong either too big or too small. My youngest commented about being able to see his pants as he bent over in front of the mirror which he thought was hilarious. Also not so sure about having HI JOE written across my daughter's bottom.

2 Of everything you saw and/or tried on from the range, what was your favourite item? And what about your DP/DC? I loved the dresses and cardigans my youngest loved the bright colours of the hoodies
and my daughter loved everything!

Easy wearing every day clothes but with strong vibrant colours so yes I think it sets a positive tone

Do you think you?d consider buying anything from the Undercover range in future? If so, what and why? If not, why not? They tend to be well made with a variety of colours. Pricing for the uu range was terrible. My dress cost the same as my cardigan and my daughter's dress.

1 Overall, what did you and your family think of the UNIQLO Undercover range? What did you like about it the most? Was there anything you didn't like?

We really liked the UNIQLO Undercover range. It had lovely, bright colours and prints, which combined with quirky, trendy styling and good quality.
It is well conceived and I was keen on its cohesive nature- for example matching jackets for the men and boys and similar shapes and prints running though the girls and women's clothes.
The women's collection had some fantastic, pretty prints in the tunics and I was disappointed I don't have a daughter/ goddaughter or niece to buy for as the girls' collection had some really lovely, pretty pieces!
It made me see functional children's clothes in a different way. My boys went to the event dressed top to toes in safe, colourful, comfortable and conservative Boden and were transformed into 'too cool for school' hipsters in clothes that looked just as durable, wearable and as high quality (although maybe not as comfortable as DS1 (5) complained that his skinny trousers were 'itchy').
There were some downsides to the collection however-
Firstly- sizing...The women's trousers were only available in sizes up to 28 waist! I managed to SQUEEZE into size 28 pair of the capri jeans for the shoot and was saved by the fact I was wearing a tunic, but I wouldn't be able to buy them despite liking them a lot. Given the fact that the collection is aimed at the whole family, it seems a bit a strange that it isn't really catering for the average mum who probably isn't stick thin and tummy isn't as toned as she'd like it to be. Another thing on this point, while some of the tunics could hide a wobbly tum, the majority of the collection featured long tops that just aren't flattering on a less trim figure.
Secondly- boys' clothes. There are some really fab clothes in the boys' collection which I'd seen on the internet. But the 'launch event' didn't have many of these which made it a bit underwhelming for a mum of 2 DS's when the girls' collection seems to have a lot more available. We were told more items such as the quirky t-shirts would be coming in April. There wasn't much for boys older than 3-4. Luckily DS1 is very small and could just about fit into that size, but he was still restricted on tops.

Question 2 to come...

Report
woodlysmum · 22/03/2012 12:40

2 Of everything you saw and/or tried on from the range, what was your favourite item? And what about your DP/DC?

My favourite item was the red cat print tunic which I wore with the equally covetable denim capri pants with studs (although as I noted in Q1 I couldn't actually fit them which was disappointing). DH liked the stripy shirt which he felt he could wear both at work and at home. Both DS's loved the hats and rock music obsessed DS2 (2) didn't want to take off the leather jacket and skinny jeans. DS1 liked the 'soft' white Oxford shirt.

3 The inspiration behind the Undercover collection is the designer Jun Takahashi's message to the world, to encourage families to maintain a positive outlook as they face the trials and tribulations of modern life. Do you think the collection will help promote this ideal and set a positive example? If so, why? If not, why not?

The clothes are colourful and slightly quirky which makes them 'feel good' and therefore have a positive outlook. Everything seemed good quality, well made and functional and therefore suitable for day to day use- not just 'occasional wear'. It was cohesive and succeeded in pulling all the looks together 'as a family'.

4 If you've bought clothes from UNIQLO before (either for you/DP or DCs), what is it that you liked about the clothes that made you buy them? Do you think you?d consider buying anything from the Undercover range in future? If so, what and why? If not, why not?

I have bought hoodies, vests, cashmere sweaters and t-shirts from UNIQLO before as I have found them to be excellent quality, bright, hard wearing and excellent value for money.
However, being used to UNIQLO being good value for money I was shocked at the high prices of the collection- £30 for a pair of kids' skinny trousers! £50 for a thin zip up parka! Crazy! It just isn't viable to buy a whole outfit for everyone in the family based on those prices. And kitting the whole family out is the point of the collection. I could probably kit the family out with a 'cohesive family look' in functional clothes for a lot less from the Gap. We'd look a lot less trendy, but we'd have more money in our pockets, which is more important in these times of recession.

I might buy the tunic dress for me and maybe the skinny trousers and leather jacket for DS@ as he liked them so much, but I couldn't justify buying something for everyone. Sorry UNIQLO.

We did have a lovely time though. I really enjoyed getting to play 'stylist' and working out looks for my DS's. Thank you

Do agree about the goody bag. Miles Davis?! Laura Ashley?! They obviouoly want us to lounge listening to Miles Davis whilst reading a coffee table book wearing the PJs, but it was a strange choice. Nothing for the children...

I don't seem to having much luck adding to this thread, I have typed my feedback twice, the first time my laptop died on me, so I then used my phone which logged me out before just before I could post. So, here goes, third time lucky!

  1. We had mixed views about the UU range. The adult's range was a little more casual and slouchy than either DH or I would usually wear and some of the items I tried on were quite unflattering. I did like the quirky prints and the mix of colours in the range and the clothes were comfortable and felt good quality. I found the sizing a little large, I fitted into an XS Shock Grin and my 5 yo DD tried on size 3-4 years as those in her age range hung off her. We were a little disappointed that not all the items were available in each size and so we struggled to put together an outfit for DD.

  2. I liked the skinny jeans, they were a nice shape and really comfortable. DH tried on a light grey jacket and a white shirt which did look amazing on him. My favourite item would be the Boy's Riders Jacket, DS wore this with green skinny jeans and looked like a mini rock star!

  3. I love the idea behind the range and I can see how this is reflected in the bright colours and prints in the range, however as stated some items in the range are unfortunately not that flattering.

  4. DH has bought jeans from Uniqlo before, he chose them for the fit as he is tall and skinny so struggles with standard sizes. I was impressed and surprised at how good the quality of the clothes felt and so I probably would consider buying from the UU range, mainly clothes for the DC's and possibly the skinny jeans for myself.

Thank You MN for the opportunity to attend the event Smile we all enjoyed it. We practically had to drag DD away from the Origami table! I do agree with what has already been said about the Goody Bags, it was an odd assortment, I am really happy with the top and three quarter length comfy trousers that were included but the DC's were a little disappointed that there was nothing for them.

1 Overall, what did you and your family think of the UNIQLO Undercover range? What did you like about it the most? Was there anything you didn't like?

I didn't like the baggy shapeless tunics in the women's range and dh didn't like the odd zipped pockets on the jeans. The fastenings on the children's trousers and shorts were really fiddly and sharp. I liked the prints, they were fun and quirky without being weird. I think the price range is what I expected, in between h&m and John Lewis.

The staff were very pleasant.

The shop was incredibly hot and there are no customer loos. DH was told to go to John Lewis over the road - their family loos are accessed by going through their entire children's department so they're sending people to the competition!

2 Of everything you saw and/or tried on from the range, what was your favourite item? And what about your DP/DC?

I liked the ladybird print tops and dresses.

Do you think the collection will help promote this ideal and set a positive example? If so, why? If not, why not?

Well, if you look nice, I guess you feel better about things generally.

4 If you've bought clothes from UNIQLO before (either for you/DP or DCs), what is it that you liked about the clothes that made you buy them? Do you think you?d consider buying anything from the Undercover range in future? If so, what and why? If not, why not?

No, because it's not to my taste and because the sizing of the current range is too big.

I haven't bought anything before. I don't think the Undercover range is for me. The sizing is too peculiar and whilst I appreciate the aesthetics, it's not to my taste. We are all on the small side and nothing really fitted: neither me, my husband or 2 1/2 year old dd. the only thing that fitted me was a girl's dress in size 11. We had a struggle finding anything to fit dd.

5 If you've never bought anything from UNIQLO before, has attending this event changed your perception of the brand at all? If so, how? Having attended this event, do you think you?d be more likely to buy UNIQLO clothes in future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I haven't - I now know where the shop is, so I may well drop in when I'm nearby. The marketing is good, even though I'd never been in, I knew what to expect.

Totally agree with all comments given about the women's clothes - DW had looked at the launch online the previous day and scanned the range and already instinctively knew that the women's range wasn't really designed for curvy women - a great pity!

DW totally agreed that the slightly baggy, tied on the hip tops would actually make curvy women look more bulky. But I guess, looking at the lean, fit, young crew working there, Uniqlo are maybe not targeting the range at curves...but on the other hand, it's supposed to be a range for families - and mummies often do have more voluptuous figures particularly after several children ;-)

Yes, DW was laden down with heavy bag, winter coat and all DD's stuff and felt so hassled and hot that she semi lost the will to enter into the spirit of it all. If she is feeling flustered and over-whelmed she is not really likely to browse and highly unlikely to buy anything (and this from a woman who was a serious shopper in her pre-children years!).

With the benefit of hindsight it would have been good to have been allocated one of the sales assistants to help each family (before the Store was open to the public, that is).

DW has done a straw poll of Mummies in the playground and think that whilst most of the Yummy Mummy brigade do shop in Uniqlo for themselves, very few would wish to spend £39 on a frock for a little girl or even £30 on a pair of bubble shorts. I think the kids clothes are twice as expensive as they would need to be to appeal to a broader brush of British parents!

1 Overall, what did you and your family think of the UNIQLO Undercover range? What did you like about it the most? Was there anything you didn't like?

I liked the prints on the women's clothing but found the sizing quite odd. My DS (3) tried on a pair of skinny jeans which actually fitted him! He's quite a skinny-minnie so was very impressd by that. The shorts were really nice but a bit expensive.

2 Of everything you saw and/or tried on from the range, what was your favourite item? And what about your DP/DC?

I tried on a tunic top with a cool cat print and absolutely loved it - so much so that I actually bought it! Bought my DS a pair of wine coloured skinny jeans too. I liked a lot more of the women's clothes but found the pricing to be a little on the high side.

3 The inspiration behind the Undercover collection is the designer Jun Takahashi's message to the world, to encourage families to maintain a positive outlook as they face the trials and tribulations of modern life. Do you think the collection will help promote this ideal and set a positive example? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I think the range is brightly coloured, unusual without being too 'out there'. the clothese seem to wash nicely so far, so all in all I think it comes across positively.

4 If you've bought clothes from UNIQLO before (either for you/DP or DCs), what is it that you liked about the clothes that made you buy them? Do you think you?d consider buying anything from the Undercover range in future? If so, what and why? If not, why not?

I may buy some more in the future for myself, but feel the children's range - although lovely and unusual - to be a bit expensive.

5 If you've never bought anything from UNIQLO before, has attending this event changed your perception of the brand at all? If so, how? Having attended this event, do you think you?d be more likely to buy UNIQLO clothes in future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I'd never even set foot in a store before as I always thought it was for younger skinny people (like trendy teenagers Wink ). The event certianly opened my eyes to the range they have and would like to have a better look around without a 3rd year old hiding under display tables!

Thank you for inviting me and please pass my thanks to the UniQlo staff who were very patient and helpful. It was a great idea to have an activity table with origami - my DS loved the paper aeroplane he was made which flew much better than my crappy attempt!
