Hi all,

One of the things made clear by even a brief venture onto Talk is that we all want the best for our children; which is why it's so painful to imagine a situation in which you're unable to provide them with even the essentials of food, shelter and safety. But as we know, women worldwide are dealing with this daily, whether we want to think about it or not: raising their children in circumstances which are, for the most part, unthinkable for parents in this country, amid conflicts and famines, without permanent homes or hospitals or schools.

Through its Mother Appeal, Oxfam is aiming to improve the lives of these women - and empower them at the same time. As caregivers, mothers are generally at the heart of their communities, and so are best placed to know what's really needed. By raising money specifically for mothers, in order to put the resources they need to improve their lives directly into their hands, the Mother Appeal hopes to change the shape of poor and war-torn communities around the world - which is why we're really glad to be supporting it.

This Mother's Day, if you'd like to help make a real difference to communities in developing countries for years to come and celebrate mums around the world, dedicate a square of Oxfam GB's live Mother's Day Card. The website's live stream shows award winning artist Lizzie Mary Cullen bringing the messages to life on a giant canvas, creating a beautiful piece of art. At the end of the event, the artwork along with all the dedications, will be turned into a giant Mother's Day card; hopefully breaking the world record for most contributions to a greetings card. You can also attach an optional donation to any square you dedicate, and better yet as part of the Mother Appeal, the UK government will match whatever you pledge, pound for pound*.

And finally, if you tell us why you've dedicated your square, you'll be in for a chance to win an overnight £250 spa break for two at Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat in Staffordshire**.

Many thanks and Happy Mother's Day to all,
Justine

*The UK government will match the value of everything donated to the Mother Appeal. Matched funding is up to a maximum total value raised of £5 million. It covers:

-Fundraising events taking place between 31 December and 31 March 2014 and if the money is paid in by 31 May 2014

-The value of items shwopped or donated to the appeal between 31 December 2013 and 31 March 2014 and sold before 30 April 2014 in participating Oxfam and M&S stores in England, Scotland and Wales

-Cash donations between 31 December 2013 to 31 March 2014

**The prize draw will take place on Mother's Day this 30 March. Full terms and conditions can be found here.

I've done it because my mum is wonderful,I am here because of her in so many ways.

I can't begin to imagine what it is like not to be ale to provide your children with everything they need. Heartbreaking.

I dedicated it because love doesn't have to be a two way thing - my mum loved me before I could reciprocate, and now dementia stops her expressing it, and will soon mean she doesn't know me, I love her still

I dedicated a square to my mum because even though we live quite far apart and rarely see each other in the flesh, we speak most days and she often makes me cry laughing at the things she gets up to!

I've done one, not for my own mum (who is amazing and fabulous in many ways but wouldn't be into this at all ) but instead for an amazing lady who was like a mum to me at a very difficult time in my life. In fact she was like a mum to many lost souls. Sadly she died last year and I miss her more than I ever thought I could miss anyone.

I've dedicated a square to her and made a donation because mums matter.

I wrote a square for my Mum as she was a fabulous lady who always had a smile on her face and would do anything for anyone. I am thankful for everything she did for me and appreciate it all the more now that I'm a Mum myself.

I have dedicated my square because my mum is the best role model a girl could have - When I was young I knew I could ask my mum anything. She would ALWAYS answer it with truth and honesty, but if she did not the answer we would find it out together.

So now my kids can also ask me any awkward question and a truthful answer too.

She is an inspiration and a wonderful lady....Glad she is my mum. xx

I dedicated a square to my MIL. My own mother is bloody wonderful, but I feel like I have been fortunate enough to gain a second Mum since my husband died - his death has definitely brought us closer. I feel very lucky having two such inspirational and special women in my life.

I've dedicated my square to my mum because she has advanced parkinsons and struggles on a daily basis. I love her with all my heart and want her to realise how much she means to me.

I have dedicated a square to my daughter, who is now a Mum herself and is doing a really wonderful job.
She makes me smile every time I watch her 'mothering'

It hasn't been easy, and I wanted to let the world know that she is amazing!

I have dedicated a square to my mum.We have had ups and downs and have now achieved a fantastic relationship. She brought me up by herself...I still blush at how awful I could be.She is a true inspiration and Ivalue her opinion. Also she is a great Nonna. She also makes me cry with laughter.Even though we live a few hours away she is so supportive and we are going to live closer to her in 4 years so we can have quality time and I can be there for her.

I have dedicated a square to my Mum, because she is my Mum, as increasingly as a mother I realise how much she did for us. She was the backbone to our lives.

redirect your post brought years to my eyes.

I dedicated mine to my mother, who I have appreciated so much more since having my own children.

I have dedicated a square to her because she taught me to be politically aware and to try and change things for the better for those who can't do it themselves. Despite growing up in poverty herself, she has achieved so much for herself and her children.
And she is a fantastic grandma to my daughter, a great role model.

I dedicated my square to my mother who has shown me the power of a gentle soul, a kind heart and a fierce intellect. She's not well and has lived with a debilitating chronic illness for many years without ever once showing us a moment of self pity and always with an unrelenting sense of humour.
One of our favourite family stories that sums her up is being in the car on holidays with my father. She was giving him heaps about being late to something and he said bitterly that he wasn't going to enjoy the vacation if she was just a timekeeper the whole time. In a grand gesture she unhooked her watch strap and flung the watch out of the car window. "There!" she said dramatically, "No clock watching the rest of the trip!" There was stunned silence in the car. Then Daddy asked "Was that watch from the pound store?" and she burst into giggles and said "Absolutely". She's the best.

I've just dedicated and donated. We just wanted to be remembering my mum this mothers day - even though she is no longer with us - we are always thinking of her. And what better way than to help support Oxfam with this initiative.

I dedicated one to my mum because she is fabulous. She has run the London Marathon twice for her granddaughter's charity, dropped everything and flew halfway round the world to be with me when I was booked in for a c section and does all of this with a smile on her face. Totally inspiring.
