ORTHOTICS HELP PLEASE! WHAT ARE SFO's?????

DS had a review appointment with the orthotics department last week - who concluded that he is still having problems - particularly with regard to toe walking and inward 'rolling'. The man said he would order some new piedro's as he was in the 'growing room' of his current ones, he also said he would put a 'better insole' in.
I didn't question this at the time as I didn't think it really meant anything, but I have just had a phonecall making an appointment to go back in early January to have his boots and SFO's fitted. I didn't like to show my ignorance on the phone - so just agreed and made the appointment (I know - I'm daft for not speaking up!!!)Blush

What are SFO's???

Do you mean AFOs? AFOs are splints made of plastic that fit over the foot and then fit inside the shoe

I honestly don't know!
I thought she said SFO's - and he hasn't had any kind of fitting for a plastic splint?

but yoyu would have to have a casting made for AFOs, maybe SFOs are a insole that fits insidethe shoe

I've searched everywhere, google - the lot - can't find anything that says SFO's - so heaven knows what she meant - I do think it's some sort of insole - but am still curious as to what it means!

AFO's extend to the top of the calves and SFO's go just above the ankle. They are molded plastic. They take a mold of your foot

Thought I would chime in here as we have used both AFOs and SFOs. AFO stands for Ankle Foot Orthotic and SFO means Shin Foot Orthotic. The only difference between the two is the height the Orthotic will travel up the leg. SFOs are more rigid and are often used when the patient is able to overcome the AFOs rigidity.

Hope this helps!!
