Mum is driving me crazy. She's trying to be so clued up on special needs but she keeps constantly comparing My Ds to other SN children. I posted about her before being in denial and she still is. She so isn't helping. She keeps telling me about this boy who has learned to speak within the last year as if that's proof that my Ds will be the same. Anything negative she just ignores or says that he is "still a baby" and that I am expecting too much. I haven't even told her about the assessment that was done that says that Ds is more than a year behind in comprehension language and social skills because she is so stubborn she will just argue that it must be wrong because he is "bright as a button."

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH

You have my sympathy - my mum is exactly the same. She is also in complete denial that DS has any problems. DS has been recently diagnosed with aspergers and when I told her she said "but he isn't stupid"!!!!! I explained that it's a form of autism and she automatically thought of Rain Man.

As a side topic- my son runs with his arms limp by his side. Is that common for children with ASD?

I get the same. Stories about kids with CP who walk and talk. My mum doesn't grasp the differene between mild, moderate and severe. Its all CP and cos one has done it, they all will.
But dd is stubbornly remaining total body CP.

oliandmimismummy - AS certainly doesn't mean a child is stupid, sometimes "too far" the other way.... and Rain Man was (is) NOT stupid either. I suppose I'm lucky in a way not to have to put up with annoying crap from my mum, I just take her out to lunch every month and that keeps her happy - suits me!

Apparently she knows my Ds better than I do as well therefore I'm wrong when I think he has problems in certain areas.
