Just wondered if anyone had hired a private SALT to help their child with speech problems.

DS is 5 and has speech problems. He was seeing a SALT until a few months ago but was since diagnosed with selective mutism so these sessions have now been stopped for the time being.

The group sessions were unsucessful as were the one on one sessions at the speech centre as he could'nt talk in that situation.
This was when the selective mutism was diagnosed as he does'nt talk in school ethier, but talks at home and in most other situations.

The SALT did do a home visit and DS did talk to her in that situation but due to resources home visits are'nt possible.

Another SALT came to the home to assess DS for the purpose of a statement and he also talked then too.

AS it is not possible for a SALT to do home visits on a regular basis it is unfortunate as this seems to work.

At the moment DS is waiting on a statement and his speech therapy has been put on hold.

So was wondering if hiring a private SALT to come to the home would be another option and if anyone else has done this?

Also not to clear on what the statement would be for, would he get help with his speech in school from a trained professional?

Or is the help a statement provides in school for day to day support when the teachers are over strethched?

Sorry for the long post and lots of quesions am feeling a bit confused by it all.

Where do you get one? and how much does it cost?

TIA

I hired one through ASLTIP to assess and give me a program of work for DS. It was £150 all in, but that included several hours work (2 visits to us at home, and 1 visit to observe him at nursery) so I think was perfectly reasonable value. Future appointments will be £50/h.

I think it's a very worthwhile thing to do, particularly since in your case you're not getting what you need on the NHS.
