SN children

requested to see DS school records. What should I be looking for?

Hi,

I have asked to see all of DS's records. I know they will include his sticker charts, minutes of meetings we have attended, and his attendance data. We have already seen all of these things. I hope it will include incidents logs of his behaviour.

But should there be anything else I should look out for?
How will I know if they have sent me everything, or just the bits they want me to see?

thanks

It will depend if you asked under the data protection act or freedom of information act. We asked under the data protection act and they initially only gave us what was on ds's file held at school. ( they were given wrong information from the exclusions officer as to what information they had to give me) I went through my case officer and said I knew stuff was missing and they then gave me everything mentioning my son's name. This included emails from other parent's complaining about my son, incident logs and emails between staff. Not pretty reading.

Oh, I didn't quote any act, just asked for copies of his school records.

Perhaps ill have to wait and see what comes, and have a rethink.

I was surprised at how little I got back when I did this, most of it I had copies of already, or the originals.

Sorry must have got the FOI act bit wrong but I do remember school saying they only had to give me what was in ds's file rather than anything stored elsewhere in school. So the incident reports were all missing , salt reports, and the emails between people. What really surprised me was they asked the exclusions officer for advice on what to give me and even the case officer checked with their legal department before confirming that I had a right to see everything. They genuinely didn't seem to know what information to give.

Will it do me any good to see everything, or will it just upset me? Is there a benefit to seeing it all?

I was given what I belive was everything (I am sure there was emails about ME not included but I didn't need to see them). Mine was with my LEA. Not pretty reading but I never expected it to be. I got some real gems that I couldn't belive they sent me regarding his stat assessment and NIL decision making process.

I also did his NHS file. It didn't read well with their opions on how I gone about things like complaining but I had to adopt a thick skin and TBH they was more professional in their emails about me than I would have been.

Like Polter there was a few key things I wanted to see and I stated that in my request. Most of it I had seen before
