Hi I'm new here and can't believe I've not joined before now.. So much useful information for a first time mum!

Background: My daughter is 19 months old. She was born at 33 weeks via emergency c section at st marys due to IUGR. She has chronic kidney failure which was discovered at 5 days old.

A few months ago it was decided she should be fed via ng tube as she needs a lot of fluids to keep her kidneys flushed out, more than she is able to drink, and due to poor weight gain. (Failure to thrive)

I would really like to put her into a nursery a few days a week while I work and for her to be mixing with other little ones. So my question is, do nurserys taken on children with ng tubes? I asked my health visitor today and she couldn't tell me. Really hope someone here can help me! Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this for me.

Will she need to fed via the NG tube while at nursery? If not then i can't see a problem and if it gets pulled out accidentally by DD or another child then they can call you to sort it out.

If she does need an NG feed at nursery then the staff will need to be trained to give the feeds by a professional such as community paeds nurses. At least that's what happens at schools in my area (i was a school nurse).

The only issue is finding a nursery where staff are willing to feed via ng as they don't normally get paid any extra for this.

Hello, my DD is tube fed and attends a mainstream nursery. She does recieve some 1:1 for other separate issues but 4 members of other usual nursery staff have been fully trained in all things tube; and it was the same when she was in a previous nursery. I found initially staff were a little resistant/squeamish at first but now it is second nature and they don't question it. Our community nurse is a lovely but firm lady and she made it perfectly clear that it is simple to learn and refusing is discrimination.

As for feeds, that is up to you/your medical team and your daughters needs. If she needs continous feeds I'm guessing nursery might have to give a feed; for us I rejigged some of the feeds so DD only needs x1 water bolus in nursery hours and I make up the volumes the rest of the day, or if we are doung a night feed let that fun a bit longer. As well as these fab boards there is a super tube feeding group on facebook if you are on there?
