Not much progress during wave 3 intervention moderate dyslexia

DS age 7.4 has a recent diagnosis of moderate dyslexia from LA EP as part of SA process. The statement is rubbish so appealing but waiting on a date. His reading age beginning October 2013 (chronological age 6 years 7 months) was 5.6-5.8yrs (13th percentile) and spelling age 5.3-5.5yrs (6th percentile) measured independently by WRAT4.

He then started a wave 3 intervention called Reading Rescue based on Reading Recovery on advice from LA specialist teaching service. His reading/spelling age was measured again at the end of March (chronological age 7.1yrs) by the LA EP using BAS III. His reading age was measured as 5.4 yrs (8th percentile) and spelling age 5.10 months (10th percentile). I'm not sure if these are directly comparable with the WRAT 4.

His KS1 SATS results were 1c in reading/writing. This was a very small increase from P8 at the end of Y1 which equates to 1 NC point or half a sub level.

School are now proposing for him to do the Fischer Family Trust on advice from LA specialist teaching service. I believe that it's also based on Reading Recovery so sounds like more of the same that isn't working. The gap is roughly a year bigger between him and his peers than before he started it! I've been reading what I can about dyslexia and it seems these methods are not recommended.

I wondered if anyone with knowledge of dyslexia and interventions could give me some pointers?

Thanks for reading

Got phonics check results today (had to redo them as only scored 5 in Y1) and he scored 20.

The wrat4 and BAS are not directly comparable as they are two different standardised assessments.

Imo I feel that for dyslexics the wrat4 is more reliable. LA EPs tend to use the BAS, which ime doesn't always reflect the true dyslexic profile of strengths and weaknesses.

With regards to the wave 3 support - who is this being delivered by? a TA? or does your son have any 1:1 tuition with a dyslexia specialist?

The program is overseen by a LA specialist teacher who reviews his progress and does some sessions with him but those sessions are sporadic as funded by school. This is one of the reasons why I'm appei g his statement as it basically says that school are to decide what he needs and they are to fund it out of their SEN budget!

That's interesting about BAS. It didn't show a spikey profile and he scored much lower than I expected with the 6 sub levels all being around the 30th percentile. His previous cognitive testing done a year earlier was the WPPSI and showed a few sub levels at the 75th percentile and one at the 25th and one on the 6th.

BAS imo is not the most appropriate standardised assessment for dyslexics, which is why LA EPs tend to use it.
My daughter also demonstrated a flat profile on the BAS, yet with the wrat4 and WISC assessments her profile was spikey and typically dyslexic.
I would be requesting weekly 1:1 tuition with the specialist teacher. have you had an indie EP assessment?

Thanks billiejeanbob, thats really useful to know. Not had an indie EP assessment yet as waiting for tribunal date.

I'm thinking that he needs weekly 1:1 tuition. I think school still think he'll just grow out of it!

we have just been to tribunal over this. dd was assessed by LA EP using BAS and indie EP using wrat4 and WISC. BAS showed a flat profile so LA tried to argue that dd wasnt dyslexic but had global learning difficulties. The tribunal judge overruled this and said that WISC is more reliable for dyslexics and then ordered for the dyslexia diagnosis to be included within the statement.

That's really useful to know, thanks!

My knowledge is AS/HFA as I have an older dd with AS who is in an independent specialist school. I'm now trying to learn about dyslexia.

The LA EP did diagnose with moderate dyslexia in his report bizarrely enough but I'm gonna guess that he also took in to account the earlier testing! Didn't put any good recommendations for support in it though!
