Survey on Mumsnet for Scope finds that children with disabilities are often unable to participate in extra-curricular clubs and activities

Hello there

Some of you will remember taking part in this survey last month on how easy/difficult it is for children with disabilities to access extra-curricular clubs and activities - Scouts and Guides, sports clubs, clubs run by local authorities and so on.

The results are now up on Scope's website and they make interesting reading. There's been quite a lot of broadcast coverage of the results today, and there's an article on the BBC site about it as well.

Just thought we'd flag it up to you as you were good enough to do the survey for us. If you fancy tweeting about it or sharing it on Facebook, do please feel free!

And if you have any wisdom to share about how you and your DCs have dealt with negative attitudes in these sorts of contexts (or indeed, positive experience about out-of-school clubs), do let us know about them.

Thanks
MNHQ

Thanks Rowan

A depressing read. Have shared.

Depressing indeed, but my child is not unable to participate. Services are unable and more often unwilling to make the necessary and often free adjustments to accommodate him.

I think the emphasis is slightly too much on the child here.

My ds attends a couple groups that many are surprised to hear about. But it is because they are so inclusive and unafraid of his disability and staffed by people with the right kind of attitude that makes it possible.
