Can anyone describe the Makaton signs for 'black' and 'white' and 'toast' please?

toast -flat hands moving upwards like toast popping out

black- fist stroke down your cheek

white- not sure which you use as I know 3
most common with makaton users (IME) pinch the front of your t-shirt.

Hope that helps

Cheers mate!
For 'toast'is that with finger tips pointing up or thumbs?
Also does 'white' not get confusing if you happen to be wearing red or blue clothes?
Could you tll me 'brown' too?
Sorry for all questions but we're just starting out and ds3 is like a sponge at the moment

toast - fingers up
don't know about white I don't actually use that one (I use BSL but have also done Makaton and signalong!)
Brown-flat hand rub the corner of the opposite shoulder

Sorry I'm not very good at describing!

Can anyone help me please?
We have just been told that our 3yr old daughter has significant language dealy and numerous other problems, we have been told to use makaton with her, but then been left to get on with it without any help or support as theres a long waiting list for therapy. she starts nursery september and really wanted to try and help her communicate a lttle by then but dont know were to start. would welcome any advice from people who have been through the same experience.
sorry to sound so desperate! just frustrated.

elissa, we started by introducing just a few new signs a week - maybe 3 or so, but you might be able to move a bit faster as your dd is older than mine was when we started signing.
It makes sense to focus on the ones that are most important to your daughter - with most children this will be 'more' (this tends to be the first sign most people introduce) and then stuff like 'biscuit', 'drink', 'book', animal signs etc.
You can buy the vocabulary books from educational suppliers such as Winslow , and watch programmes like Something Special on CBeebies and get the Makaton nursery rhymes video from Amazon to see it being used in action.
Hope this helps, feel free to ask if you want to know more!

We're doing it for speech/language delay too.
Can I recommend 'Something Special' on CBeebies at 11.30 and 3.30 at the moment.
(I borrowed some books but it is much easier watching someone)
I cannot believe how much ds3's world has opened up in a fortnight or so,it is amazing and I am so proud of him.
It hasn't increased 'words' but his communication in general has really jumped a level.
I am a total convert to Makaton.
Good Luck!

The Something Special website has all the signs described in video and by symbol. It's got all the basics you would need including colours etc.

What's the difference between sing and sign and singalong? Some of the groups round here have an invented sign language, sort of a mix between makaton and made up signs. BSL stuck in there somewhere too which is totally different. BSL is a language, verbs, grammar etc and sooo different to makaton. I use makaton with sn and nt kids, because now it's used in so many nurseries to integrate and my "babies" that I teach love signing.

I'm a Makaton local tutor and there are several differences between the different sign systems
BSL is a language it has it's own syntax and grammer.
Makaton (and Signalong) are a signed vocabulary. The important difference is that speech is used.
I think (but I'm not sure) that signalong was developed by a few breakaway Makton people/SALTs who became frustrated that the Makaton vocabulary was not wide enough for the adults they were using it with.
Signalong has a wider vocab and has done for several years. It is set up differently to makaton using a topics approach as opposed to Makaton who use a 'widening need' method of learning the signs.
I don't know anything about about sign and sing.
You will be fine with the sign white plucking the shirt even if you wear red or blue as you are saying the word white to consolidate your signs.
I think brown is actually making a dominant hand circle movement on the inside of your opposite wrist. (I don't have the book at home but can check this on monday)
Black is a circular movementt on your cheeek with a clenched fist with knuckles towards your cheek your hand circles backwards.
Makaton have just bought out several additions to the their vocabulary.
Food and drink, people and occuapations and performing arts which are avaliable on the website
Makaton
