johnpaolo - I too hit a wall when looking for tutors, so what I did was go on a website called nannyselect. I put an advert up which made ABA sounds very unthreatening and not scary thing that would put people off ("I don't know anything about all that") and promised training by my supervisor. I found two absolutely fantastic tutors on there - one of whom was actually a nursery school teacher looking for extra hours to boost her income. She stayed with us for 5 years and is now a v professional ABA person. Do not overplay the ABA though - I think I said something in my ad like

"Looking for candidates with lots of experience with children, to work with my autistic boy and help him learn through play. Full training will be provided by a trained professional. ÂŁx per hour".

Crucially, I also paid them while they got trained, That was expensive, but it made the job v attractive to them.

I would second SickOf's suggestion. Not mentioning ABA in the advert will help - in sumemr holidays school teachers might be able to join.

Have you posted on aba-uk yahoo group?

Hi johnpaolo,

The North West is rather a large place but there is another thread from a poster called Kafri on this board that may be of interest to you.
Good luck in your search x

Hi we have a psychology student volunteer available in Bolton BL1 if any good.

I agree ABA tutors are difficult to find and most are recruited and trained up for an ABA program.

Volunteering is also great for finding the right person who gets on with your child. You can also hire them if all goes well. Someone in south east had similar issue so we advertised with a broad description and they ended up with a very experience and talented person.

There are some great talented people out there it just the matter of connecting with them.

If you need any help PM here or on //www.AutismMeetup.co.uk or @AutismMeetup
