DS started reception in Sept. At parents evening I asked if he was on the special needs registar (he wears hearing aids) was told no because he does not have 'learning' needs. After half term was told they've changed their mind and want him on school action plus, I have a meeting about his IEP later what should I ask? They have put in place half an hour teaching a week to concentrate on blending and auditory discrimination and he has visits from a teacher of the deaf, at the moment he has age appropriate skills in all areas. I think they are doing everything necessary but don't want to miss the opportunity to add something if it is needed. Sorry to ramble

School Action Plus is one step short of a Statement of Special Needs.

Presumably you are meeting the SENCO (special needs co-ordinator) along with his class teacher to discuss the IEP.

I would keep a close eye on things with regards to this as if you feel longer term the IEP is not sufficient you can apply to the LEA for a Statement. A statement is a legally binding document detailing your son's needs and has to be adhered to. It would certainly provide more hours per week in terms of support.

I do not think that 30 minutes teaching per week along with visits from a teacher of the deaf (how often does this happen and for how long) is very much at all.

To be honest at the moment he is doing well at school, more teaching means missing more of what the whole class are doing, and as long as he copes by himself (which he does at the moment), i'd rather he didn't have an LSA. The class LSA checks all his equipment and has had training to do that. I realise that this may change and there is a possibility that his hearing may deteriorate in which case we would push for more.
