Social skills suggestions particularly rules of games etc

DS (6) has language disorder which is barely noticeable now but I have noticed he has problems 'getting' the rules of games, in particular team games like football. I asked his 1:1 if he could help him with this but it hasn't been happening, for several reasons.

Does anyone know of any private or nhs schemes that help with this sort of thing? We live in SW London area. Do I have to speak to his SALT (who visits him 2x a term)? Thanks.

Who would do social skills programmes in your area? CAHMS perhaps? I know there are lots of social skills board games out there that teach turn-taking etc but they're very expensive to buy as a parent. If you could find someone through your LA or Health Service maybe you could find out if you could borrow some tools to use at home. Your SALT could be a first port of call because I'd expect she'd know 'who does what' with social communication conditions.

Do you have a support group or privately run charity that might have something?

Sorry not much help, that's all I can think of!

Thanks KT. Sorry to be ignorant but what is CAHMS? I will try and contact DS's SALT. I had no idea about support groups or charities - that is a good idea. Thanks.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (sorry, I mistyped it - don't tell Pedants' Corner!!)

You would probably need a referral to contact them if you need them, which you'd do via your GP, but they might accept an informal chat if you can get hold of the phone number. Yours might go under another name - ours is Child and Family Psychiatry but it's the same thing.
