Does my son need a SEN?

My son has hypermobility syndrome which gives him a few problems like bad constipation, trouble walking/running, pains in his knees, a bit clumsy. I have informed the school of his problems in a casual way but I am wondering do I need to make more of an issue in a formal way or seek a SEN because lately I am finding that teachers are not letting him go to the toilet when he absolutely needs to go and because he takes too long (chronic constipation means that he needs to pee alot & can't control bowel v. well), also he is forced to do stuff in PE that hurt his legs or things he just can not do and then accused of not trying hard enough!

do you mean a statement?

Yep a statement of special educational needs or are his probs too trivial for an SEN. I know that an SEN is for kids with serious needs but don't really know much about them - just wondered if someone else does?

Talk to the Head. Your son's problems should be dealt with in a sensitive way without going through all the time-consuming bureaucracy involved in getting a statement. I'm not sure whether a statement might be worthwhile for other reasons though.
