We had a meeting with SENCO yesterday for DS 12 yr7

He is going to be put on the SEN register for Dyslexia. Apparently he was on the register in primary but was taken off. He did have a lot of indvidual help with spelling and just managed to scrape a level 4c for writing in sats, but was high 5's in everything else.

SENCO is going to do tests but she thinks he is definitely dyslexic and he is going to be given an Alphaword to use in class.

Does anyone elses DC use one, does it help and does it mark the child as different!

Is that on a Dana Alphasmart ? If so its like a word processor. It can be helpful but the child needs to get the words mostly right I think so it can correct

Yes, sounds like the same thing.

Hoping someone else would post with more experience! My brief encounter with a Dana was that it was good as its small & compact so doesn't stand out like a laptop but I think its quite a faff to get the work off it - ie printed out and the one I had lost all that was stored if the battery ran out! (we use a pc now). Not sure how the spellchecker works but I imagine you need a recognisable pattern of words to choose the correct spelling from ?
We also have small palm size electronic dictionary type things (can't think what they are called!) that the pupils can use like a dictionary - they are great as they look a bit like a calculator so don't stand out at all
