How to start toilet training a child with Dyspraxia?

I suspect my DD1 has Dyspraxia (I am waiting for an appointment at the child development unit for assessment) and she will be 3 in January. Whilst I don't think she is quite ready to toilet train yet, she has become conscious of when she's done a poo so we might be getting nearer the point of starting.

But as she cannot communicate with us (she has around 30 words but only DH and I can understand most of them) where do I start with toilet training? Do I just let it go for now and worry about it later? or do I try it? And if so how the hell is she going to be able to tell me when she needs to go if she can't talk?

Sorry for all the questions but would be grateful for any advice

Ds2 is dyspraxic and he toilet trained far easier and quicker than ds1 who isn't!

Moist toilet tissue was an essential to help him make sure he was clean and he still uses it now at age 11 or he wouldn't be able to clean himself properly.

I didn't do anything different in the training than I did with ds1. Although he wasn't able to communicate very well, he knew what he needed to do and understood that the potty and subsequently toilet was the place to go.

You have nothing to lose by going for it if you think she's ready. Good luck!

I wouldn't have thought she needed a lot of language to do this and you say that you and your DH can understand the words she has. Some children learn to use a potty long before they can say much, as long as the understanding is there. My DD is dyspraxic and at pre school age we were the only people who could understand her. She was four before she was toilet trained and eight before she was dry at night. She'll do it when she's ready, language or not.

I agree re the communication thing - she has 30 words but can communicate more. DS was trained at just past 2 and a slow speaker so it is possible.
