Hi, My daughter is 5 months on the 22nd, and I would really like for her to start to be able to go to sleep by herself. At the momment I am having to hold her with a dummy for her to go to sleep . How does controled cying work and does it work all of the time. She does not sleep through the night and has very few and short naps during the day ( she has always not sleeped that much from the time she was born).

Can anyone offer any suggestions

thanks

I did controlled crying with DS1 at 3 months, and it worked. It took a little while, and was thoroughly unpleasant, but it did work, and he was a pretty good sleeper from then on.

Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems, by Richard Ferber, is the standard CC book. There are quite a few less-painful solutions out there which work, from what I'm told, if you have the patience for them.

(The dummy may not help in the long run, as babies seem to lose them in the night, and then need help finding them again.)
