Cot to bed and back to cot - Anyone else?

I was planning to leave ds in his cot until I can no longer cram him in. Then the night before we went on holiday he announced he would be sleeping in his bed (he was 22 months). He slept in the bed all holiday and then when we got home he simply went back to his cot because it was late.

He went in his bed the next night at his request and fell asleep and promptly fell out 3 hours later. He won't entertain a bed rail.

Anyone else's kid bobbed around between the two? Like I say I'm happy for him to stay in cot for ages, but I wondered how common it was?
