Sleep

Should I take DD to doctor for 4 nights of crying in sleep?

My DD hasn't slept through the night yet and she is over two...but that isn't my current problem.

For four nights in a row she has woken between 1am and 2am, lying on her front with her knees underneath her crying out every 30 seconds or so until the morning...DH put her in bed last night to see if that would help but it didn't seem to...although she was quieter for about an hour. We've tried gripe, rubbing her back while she's sleeping, checked temperature, positioning, nappy fit, everything and can't find a reason for this.

When she does it she is actually asleep and eventually wakes herself up and keeps her eyes closed...she is definitely not doing it for attention, I feel she has an upset tummy/wind or something similar but can't seem to shift it for her but am concerned in case there is something else.

  1. is this normal?
  2. should I go to the doctor bearing in mind they've seen me so often about different sleep problems and they tell me to 'let her cry it out'.
  3. within herself she is wonderful as usual and bouncy and not at all cranky and goes to bed beautifuly.

Any advice, I don't know if not going to the doctors is right or wrong or if I'm overlooking something obvious.

Any help would be appreciated - Joe

Could it be her molars coming through? Have you tried some calpol or neurofen when it happens? Dd is a similar age and has had similar mystery night-time cries, have been attributing it to teeth.

I didn't think it was teeth as she has no other symptoms. She did have calpol the first night it happened which I thought might possibly be why she had a disturbed night (she suffers night terrors and sometimes Calpol/Medised can make them worse).

Is this likely with no other symptoms do you think?

Not sure, I probably tend to write off a lot of dd's night-time stuff as "teeth" and give her a slug of something (bad mummy). Having said that I am sure she's getting more in the way of upset from bad dreams & things now she's older.

Is she eating & poo-ing OK? Would do no harm for GP to give her a quick check over to put your mind at rest.

DD - just turned 2 (hello Liath !) goes through phases of odd night time crying/waking, although is usually quite a good sleeper.

Hers have definitely tied in with new teeth appearing. She generally has no other symptoms other than a runny nose and now we just accept its her teeth. TBH she isn't even that unhappy when she wakes up at night as long as we stay with her till she goes back to sleep (which is ususally about 2 hours !) but as it always ties in with teeth appearing assume it can only be this. When we are going trhrough a phase of it we give her 1 spoonful of medised to stop her nose running and this seems to get her through the night again (obviously this dose wouldn't last her all night but we assume it gets her into a deep enough sleep that she doesn't notice the niggle).

Thanks guys, it might be her teeth then, but she has absolutely no other symptoms which makes me a bit wary. I think I'll go and waste 2 hours of my time at the doctors just to reassure myself as I'll be kicking myself at 2am otherwise!

Thanks again for your advice -Joe
