my baby is 4 months and before christmas transformed from a terrible sleeper (i posted lots before about my 45 mins boy), waking every hour and never napping, to a great one - the nest christmas present ever!

my one residual problem is getting to sleep at night....i have tried various combinations of daytime naps and bedtimes but he always seems to cry around 6-10 ish and very difficult to settle in his cot. paed reckons is colic? who knows??

the thing that really works to get him off to sleep is the vacuum cleaner....i disoovered his the past few days....my question is whether this is a bad idea? does it mean that he'll get used to this and need a vacuum cleaner to get to sleep for a long time or will he grow out of it? also does this mean he'll not gain ability to self settle?

any ideas gratefully received.

Vacuum cleaner noise is called white noise - you can buy tapes/CDs of it! Babies often find it soothing but I don't know why. I'd recommend co-sleeping too

Thanks - he's not content with the cds sadly - ds wants the real deal! we were co-sleeping til 3 months but then got him in the cot where he seems to sleep much better and longer so not keen to go back to that...

Friends made a recording of their vacuum cleaner to play and therefore save electricity, but then their ds woke up when the tape clicked at the end!

A hairdryer is easier to take on holiday...
