6 week old - how to send him back to sleep

My 6 week old DS goes down between 11pm and 1am each night. He sleeps for around 2 and a half hours, 3 if we're lucky. He then wakes for a feed, and goes back down for 1 and a half hours, occasionally 2. I feed him then and try to get him back to sleep, but nothing works, he cries and cries. The only thing which settles him is me getting up and taking him downstairs with the lights on and givimg him attention - then he's instantly all smiles. Is 4 hours of sleep a reasonable amount to expect with a young baby? He rarely sleeps in the day for more than 10 minutes at a time. Coming into bed with us used to send him off but now me getting up is the only thing which will do for him, and I'm KNACKERED!

2 things I have found helpful are swaddling (best book I have found on this is Harvey Karp, Happiest Baby on the Block - Ssssh - I would just read it in a bookshop, not necessarily buy the book), or miracle blankets available from mothercare are supposed to be good.

Or (and I have just received this in the post today) a white noise CD from www.littlesleepyhead.co.uk. Basically its just a recording of tumble drier, vacuum cleaner, dishwasher and a fan heater - cheaper to play a CD than run the appliances themselves. We are currently listening to track 4, 'Fan Heater' and DD (5 weeks) has dropped off.

I always found that feeding my babies in a dark room meant they never really woke up... that and stroking their noses, sounds weird, but by stroking down their foreheads and noses slowly made them sleepier..
