Interested to know others views as I always put DS in the dark for his daytime sleeps as i had read this would help him sleep at night. Now have DD 7 weeks do n't think she has ever gone to sleep during the day in the dark as we are usually out. Does'nt seem to have made any difference still goes down at 7-730 in the dark and sleeps to 2 then again till 6, have recently read that daytime naps should n't be in the dark as they need to learn the difference between night and day what do others think?

Personally, I wanted dd to experience a difference between night and day, and I think has caught on to that - at 16 weeks she consistently settles for the night after her last feed at around 11.30pm, for which I switch off the main light in her room and just use a table lamp. She then sleeps through until 8am. She's been doing this since 9 weeks . Don't ask me how we got to this happy state of affairs, it just sort of happened. Dh tells me I am a miserable cow in the middle of the night, so maybe dd cottoned on to this, too.

During the day, she naps as she wants to, and as she is usually in the same room as me, it is daylight. Also, I don't creep around making no noise just because she's asleep. I don't get hung up about her napping at set times - as long as she sleeps at night, she can sleep as little or as much as she likes during the day. I know I might be setting myself up for a hard time when she's a toddler, but I don't see any point in making life stressful at the moment.

I remember when my niece (now 10) was a baby SIL used to put her in a dark room for naps, which was fine until the first time they went on holiday, I think niece must have been a toddler, and found the place they were staying didn't have blackout curtains... Lo and behold, niece would not sleep at all until it got dark or she crashed out from exhaustion.

nver put my 2 kids to sleep in the dark during the day, as they were tired and in need of a nap anyway, they don't need it to be dark

I do a bit of both - sometimes he has a nap in his cot with the curtains drawn, sometimes in the kitchen in his bouncy chair, sometimes out and about in the buggy. He is not generally very keen on daytime naps so when he seems tired I try one place first and if that doesn't work, try another. I find sometimes he needs the dark and quiet of his cot, and other times is happy to drift off in the midst of things.
