my baby only sleeps for a max of 45 mins at a time!

Hi

Help - my 6 week old baby is a terrible sleeper. He is wakeful most of the time and its a huge effort to get him off to sleep. Tried every trick in the book - swaddling, white noise, rocking etc to get him to sleep and one of these usually works.

We can get him off to sleep but he awakes after a max of 45 mins and its impossile to get him to go back to sleep and the whole process needs to be restarted.

For daytime naps thats fine but at nighttime its a nightmare. The only way I can get him to sleep for longer or at least enable me to get some sleep is to put him in bed with me.

He is b/f and I have even tried formula to see if its makes a difference in nighttime feed but it doesn't...

Any suggestions, similar experiences would be helpful.

Many thanks

Why not keep him in bed? I co-slept from the 2nd night due to that problem... and its been excellent! As long as you follow the guidelines, its perfectly safe

am co-sleeping most of time and have to admit loving waking up next to my baby but problem is dp has to be kicked out of bed as he smokes and is v heavy sleeper and also i get awful backache so not sure is a long term solution for me...

plus i keep reading all these posts about mums who can't get their older babies out of their beds so thought shd make headway now.

You could get a 3 sided bedside cot? Then your all free to roll about as normal Maybe you should take it as an oppurtunity to stop DP smoking? When DS gets better and better, you can gradualy put the other side up, then move the cot further away from the bed....

hi,when my ds was 6 wks old, he had the same problem .he is 12 wks now and is a good sleeper.i was reading somewhere that babies s young as that can only manage short spells of sleep at a time.it will get better in the next few weeks.
what about putting him in a sleeping bag?i find that ds sleeps much better in one.

Hi mummatovinvin - I can totally sympathise with you! My dd did exactly the same thing at around 6-9 weeks and was an awful sleeper. I was a walking corpse through lack of sleep.

The only advice I can give you is that it WILL get better. I tried everything in the book to fix her sleeping but to no avail - in the end she simply grew out of it.

She's now 11 weeks old and only wakes once a night - something that I could never have imagined a few weeks ago. I know every day seems like a lifetime when you aren't getting any sleep but I promise you it won't last forever.

Good luck
