Sleep

How many naps does your 12/13 month old have?

DS is coming up to 13 months and currently seems to be sleeping for England. For instance he woke up at 7 this morning demanded to go back to sleep again at 9 and is still sleeping! I dont normally let him nap so early but we are off to a soft play centre in a minute so need to get sleep out of the way.

He usually naps about 9.30/10ish for about 1.5 hours then will have a second nap about 2.30ish for another hour. He then goes to bed about 7.15 (asleep by 7.30 usually) and sleeps through till about 6.30 although for the past couple of days he has slept in till nearer to 7.

He has just started taking his first steps so dont know if this has anything to do with it?

Anyway my question is is this an average amount of sleep or should he need less?

Hi Rach,

Someone else might know more, to me it sounds that he just needs the sleep right now, could it be that he is coming down with something that isn't necessarily making him ill, just feeling tired?

I don't think there is a precise science around nap time, but according to one of my books it says they should sleep about 12 hours at night and two 1-2 hours naps or one 3 hour nap during the day up until about 18 months, but again it will depend on your child.

dd2 had 2 naps ( morning for about 90 min - afternoon for about 2 or 2.5 hours) until she was about 16 months. Maybe he's going thorugh a growing spurt - and some babies just need more sleep. Am gutted that dd only has one nap now!

Ds is about the same age, and has 2 naps each day, of an hour to hour and a half each usually. Although recently he's been sleeping for 2hrs plus...but he has been a bit ill ( hand foot and mouth!) so i put it down to that.

Nursery has just cut DD naps down to one at around 12:30 - normally lasts about 1 1/2 hours. Previously she was having 2 one hour naps. It does mean she is ready for bed in the evening! She is 14 months. Sometimes she will sleep longer and more frequently depending on what we have been up to and if she is feeling a bit poorly or when she is teething. As with all things I'm not sure there is a normal...
