Shattered - what happens when he wakes? What do you do? Does he have something in bed with him? A blankie, soft toy, dummie etc?

how long have you tried leaving him and what does he do if you do?

Have you tried letting your partner do ALL the night-wakings? (I'm assuming that you currently do them of course!)

what do you do to settle him when he wakes in the night?

My 18 month old son has been referred to a psycologist ( Sleep therapy) because he wakes up three times a night and more. Does anyone have any experience good or bad as i am unconvinced at the moment?

shatteredmumsrus you don't seem to have read the replies

what do you do when he wakes in the night?

It is very common for young children to wake in the night for many reasons, and not abnormal - so I'm not sure why sleep therapy is needed - you really need to explain a bit more

Blimey, I wish I'd known about sleep therapy & psychologists. Both mine were frequent night time wakers, but despite endless whinging to any health professional who'd listen, no-one thought it was unusual.
I did controlled crying with both mine. Not pleasant for me, but they seem to bear no ill will or pyschological damage!
What have you tried shatteredmum? Controlled crying usually works for even the most determined night time waker - you just have to be very strong in your own mind that you can do it.

My 18 month old has never sleep through either. Is your son still teething? Its really hard isn't it? I know I just long for a lovely uninterrupted night sleep. Hope he settles down soon.

Is he sleeping too much in the day? What time do you put him down? Does he wake to feed or out of habit? Have a look at the Baby Whisperer forum. There are thousands of q and a's on sleep.
good luck

All the questions below, could you answer them as this will give us a better idea and better information on which to advise?

To update my previous reply, I've just looked at the thread for night waking on the baby whisperer site. There are 48 pages of it!

you need to get a sleep counsellor. rather than a psychologist, they are more practical and don't look for an underlying reason just give parents a method to use that will work. Where are you, if you are near North London I can recommend a very good one.

you may have to pay about 50 quid but he or she will work out a routine and a plan for you and if you follow it it will work. After so long you need a third party to tell you what to do, you are in so deep you probably don't know your a#se from your e%bow anymore (been there, took about 22 months for ds1 to sleep through the night in his own bed)

Ask your HV for a sleep counsellor and book an appointment, it really is worth the money.

Its proberbly just habit now hes got used to it. Try not talking to him at all when he wakes. The less attention you give him the less likely he is to wake. He'll soon realise there is nothing to wake up for. When he wakes just whatch him for a bit before you rush in with solutions he may just lie himself back down fuss for a bit then go back to sleep. If he doesnt then just lie him back down without saying anything do it everytime he stands or sits up. I have to do this with my son it does work he used to wake 6 times a night he wakes about 3 now. Hes 10 months old so should be sleeping through, i think its my fault though i still give him milk at night so he still wakes for it.
