Sleep

Early wakings in 11 mo disrupting the whole family

DS2 (11mo) goes to bed nicely every night at 7pm ish after a bath, a bottle and a cuddle.
What has been killing us in the past few weeks is that DS2 wakes up most days between 5.15 and 5.45am, also waking up DS1 in the process.
As a result I am exhausted and so is DH and DS1.
We are now leaving DS2 in bed until he falls back to sleep or until 6.30 ish but as the noise insulation is very poor in our house, it still wakes everybody up. We try to be very consistent about it but it is not giving us great results as he still wakes up at the crack of dawn every other day.
He can sleep longer than this, he has done it before and DS1 used to sleep 12 hours or more straight, no problem; I therefore think that I am not being unrealistic in expecting him to sleep until at least 6/6.15am.
He sleeps pretty well during the day, normally two (1 hour or so) naps a day. And I don't think he is cold or too hot either.
I am not keen on wake to sleep and do not want to co sleep.
If you have positive experiences to share I am desperate keen to hear them.

Does his room have black out blinds? We had to double up when the clocks changed as DS's room gets the early morning sun, he has black out liners but then we added one of those gro blinds as well and it's made his room really dark again Smile

Yes! In fact he has the darkest room in the house, his room is itch black when you pull the Velux down. In fact, after checking with nursery, he sleeps less than an hour everyday.
Future pilo in the RAF, I reckon.

Is it the bloody birds singing? We have a radio playing very quietly on static at night in his room... It's mainly to stop gallumphing DH with his heavy feet waking DS at 4.45am when he has to get up for an early shift but also blocks out the tweeting!

I am smiling at shooting the birds. :)

I have a 10 month old ds who starts everyday at 5. Every. Fucking. Day.

No matter what naps he has or doesn't have or whatever else... tried it all.

I am depressed about it but just get up with him. I look 80.

Well, sleep deprivation drives people nuts.I remember chasing sheeps in my pj's at 1 am,I've had enough of baaaaaaastards, baaa, baaaa, baaaaaa, shit, had to get up for work at 5 am.No neighbours clapping.
DS 10 mo got up at 3 am last night and wanted to play.Don't ask me what time he went back to sleep.

Headline:
"Pensioner goes nuts shooting birds at dawn"
Except that the pensioner is me (36yo) but, like you Fairylea I look and feel ancient.

Correction:
"Overweight Pensioner goes nuts shooting birds at dawn"
Because lack of sleep drives me to bake cakes and eat crap.

Is it when your central heating comes on? Neighbours alarm clock? (Not sure what you'd do about that-go after them with a shotgun?!)

Running out of non violent ideas, though I sense that's not the answer you want...!

DialM - I am overweight too... I'm sure it's not helped by having two breakfasts - one at 6am with ds and one at 8.30 ish when he has a nap to keep my sugar levels and energy up !

What time does he have his naps? Early waking can be linked to the morning nap being too early/too long & at this age can also be a sign they are getting ready to transition from 2 naps to 1.

You may need to push the morning nap a touch later, or cut it shorter (to encourage a longer nap after lunch), or you may need to test the water with a single nap around lunchtime (with early waking you might need to start with nap at 10am & push it 15mins later per week til it starts at 11ish). If my ds had a single nap at lunch time I'd never get to have a shower! If he's up at 5 then his nap at 8.30ish is the only chance I get !

I hate to give you bad news with regards to showering, but the early nap probably needs to go. My DD woke at 5.15am for a year, from 6 months to 18 months. It was hideous. It only rectified itself after we cut her down to one nap a day, which is very hard when they are hanging from being so knackered at being up so early. It is very common (apparently - and believe me, I read every sodding thing there is to read on early waking) that they will wake early if they have an early nap - it's a vicious circle.

Good luck.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
I also have a 10.5m early waker. I don't think I can handle it. Ditto that's when I get a wash :(

Last night, bed at 7.50, this morning, up at 5.50. He slept just for 40 mns tops during the day. Why? Oh why?

Hi
I know what you mean , my lo s night sleep can be so different day to day , yesterday she only slept an hour all day but went out like a light at 7pm and didn't get up till nearly 9am this morning . Other times she can have 2 good naps but a rubbish night and up at 5-6am. I've been getting up at 5 to give her a feed and she s not been up till around 730 for a few weeks now . The other thing I've been doing us leaving the window slightly ajar and putting her in a long sleeve sleep suit , gro bag and her comfort blanket . Not sure if in the past she s been waking up because she has been too hot. Saying that , she s now got a runny nose and little cough so by leaving the window open ice prob made her ill which will then inevitably lead to a restless night! Typical!!!!
