Sleep

3 week old - wont settle in cot

My DS is three weeks old. Very early days I know and perhaps I should just be concentrating on survival for now! But...

During the day DS will settle quite happily for a sleep on his own in his pram (we don't have a Moses basket downstairs) and have a good 1-2 hour sleep.

In the bedroom we've got a co-sleeper cot attached to my side of the bed. However, from day 1 DS will not sleep in it! It is bigger than a Moses basket or his pram and it has open bars at the side so maybe it feels too big/ open for him? He simply won't settle in it even though I am literally inches away and even if I cuddle him.

The result is he either sleeps on me or next to me in the bed (I honestly couldn't tell you the difference between being in my bed or two inches over in 'his' - obviously he is not under the duvet or anything so he has the same blanket etx)

Any tips for getting him to settle in his co sleeper? Or is it just too early and him wanting to sleep on me is natural in these early weeks. Thoughts welcome!

They call it the fourth trimester for a reason - he was inside you such a short time ago do its only natural he wants to be close to you.

He's very very tiny and if co-sleeping is working for you, as long as you're happy and it's done safely, I'd go with it. Anything to get some sleep!

Hello, congratulatios on your DS! My DS2 is also 3 weeks old and is a total sleep-on-your-chest addict. We've found that swaddling (miracle blanket) and brushed cotton sheets help a lot. He is so tiny, he just wants to be cuddled up all warm and safe. So we're trying to make his bed feel really snug and secure. Co-sleeping is really not for me but I know that does also work for lots of people.

Have u tried getting him settled downstairs in the pram cot and taking him up in that?

I remember with dd1 she would only sleep in a moses basket so had to carry it up every night, dd2 is just as fussy but prefers a cot

Swaddling is an excellent suggestion, both mine were swaddled to begin with and would never have settled in the Moses basket otherwise.
