New bed/cotbed... what to do?

DS is just two and will be 2 and 2 months when the new one arrives. He is in grobags at the moment and the plan was to get him onto a duvet over the summer. My original thoughts were to buy a cotbed for ds and to transfer his current mattress into the new bed (and keep him in a cot for as long as possible). However, the old mattress is 120/60 and cotbeds seem to be 140/70. So... do I have to buy a new mattress for the cotbed and a new matress for the new baby or can I use the old mattress for the new baby? I seem to remember something about SIDS and old matresses. It is just a lot of money... although obviously, safety comes first.

my dd1 was 2 when dd2 came along

what we did was buy a small single bed for dd1, with a bedguard, and transfer her to that a couple of mths before dd2 came along.

dd2 then went into the cotbed (after a couple of mths in a moses basket) including the old mattress dd1 had used in the cotbed

we aired the mattress outside on the line for a day beforehand, that was all

i think its ok if the mattress has been in your house the whole time, i dont think its recommended using 2nd hand mattresses from other people, incase they were smokers, had a damp house or whatever

I personally don't think it matters if you use the same mattress for a second baby, I'm sure a lot of people do it but on the other hand I think there is some contradictory advice. I think I've read a coupl eof threads on here before about it. So I would buy a new mattress for the new cot bed (are you sure though? My dd is that age now and we're just about to buy her a big girl bed. She's in a cot bed atm- with sides on- but we have decided just to move her straight into a big bed. Just thougth it might save you a bit of cash in the long run!

my dd1 was fine in the little single bed with a bedguard

she didnt get out on her own just used to yell through for me in the morning like she did in her cotbed.

it worked out perfectly

Tilly went into a big bed (Ikea extendable) at 22 months so that we could put her cot away for a while before the new baby arrives. No real probs with her exiting in the night and she shuffles to our room in her grobag in the morning! Last week she asked for a duvet and has made the transition with no hiccups...looks very cute though!
Go for the big girl bed!!
