Does DS need a hat if hes wearing a helmet?

We are taking our 4 yr old DS for first time in March. We are renting a helmet but am wondering does he wear a ski hat under it or not? Also have parents had children at that age in helmets - his class is more about gaining familiarity with boots/skis/lifts/skiing, am not sure how much he'll need one - any advice? Its spritelets with Ski Esprit.
Also if hes in snow club in the morning and is outside and suit gets wet will they change him into dry clothes before lesson pm? Not sure whether to take two ski outfits.

I would assume that ski-suits are pretty waterproof anyway, and would be removed over lunchtime so that they are dry and warm again by afternoon>

Which resort are you going to? (DS1 is a Snow Ranger with Esprit this winter; he is loving it and I'm dying to find someone going to where he is! I can ask him about the wetness if you like)

He won't need a hat with the helmet. I would suggest definitely using the helmet anyway whether or not you think he really needs it since it'll get him used to the idea of wearing one from the very beginning.

Helmets are compulsory in skischools and resorts across much of Europe now and better to start as you mean to go on . In very cold weather ours have had hats underneath(helps soak up sweat too) and neck warmers to cover chin but March is usually ok and you may find he get very hot in just the helmet. He'll need a hat anyway since it will get nippy late afternoon and could be windy.

you can get thin balaclavas to wear under a helmet if its v cold, though.

iirc they don't go out much in the morning - not everyday anyway.

My ds has a balaclava, but my other dcs dont wear anything - their lessons don't last very long. a snood thingie (or whatever they're called) might be useful though.

I've ordered mine balaclavas to fit under helmets from muddy puddles.

mine also have the thin fleece balaclavas from muddy puddles they have been great under helmets. But we have now been twice at new year when very cold.

Thanks everyone, will look at balaclavas in case very cold and definately take on board wearing helmet so he starts off realising importance of it.
WendyWeber we are going to Kaprun in Austria. Due to the layout of the area and practicalities he will be with them from morning until late afternoon so it would be nice to know someone would check if his gear is wet if snowclub have been outside and let it dry over lunch - hate to think of him being out in the afternoon feeling wet and cold and no-one noticing/ changing his clothes. Hes not yet fully capable of undressing or dressing himself (although maybe we should be working on this - when hes in nursery so much of the time its easier to give in and help him to hurry things along).

tbh when I take ds helmet off his head is completely sweaty so unless it was absolutely freezing not sure they need anything else we always go at easter

my kids had balaclavas just in case (we have just got back) a thin one should help as they also cover the face from the wind. You won't need 2 outfits at all. A ski suit won't get wet and soggy as they are waterproof.

Usually the spritelets go to snow club in normal clothes - tracksuit or simple stuff. Mine have lightweight thermals. Then a warmer layer and last a snow suit. In the morning they may go out for a walk or bum boarding/sledging (again helmets are a must) and they have lunch then are wrapped up for lessons.

Helmets are a MUST - don't even think about not having one.
