Being a softie southerner type i would like to know if theres anywhere in Scotland we could go for Feb half term. We just want to take the kids somewhere with proper snow not necessarily to ski the whole time but maybe a bit. Mainly want to do sledging and have snowball fights etc any advice welcome. P.S. Have never been to Scotland before so really would like to go there rather than France etc!

Nowadays, it's rare to get snow in Scotland at any time of the year. 20 years ago, we went to Glenshee every year skiing, but these days the season can be completely snowless. But you might be lucky and get loads of snow - the problem is that you can't predict it. You could go somewhere like Aviemore, which has loads to do for kids whether or not there's snow. And if there is any snow, Aviemore's the one place that's likely to have it. Good luck

Yes, agree with mrsmuddle. we live in edinburgh , and pre-kids would regularly go north to ski for the day or weekend. our favourite is aviemore (cairgorm), but the nevis range is also good. and not far from nevis is glencoe, which is stunning. I hate glenshee, as i board and there are far too many button-tows! aviemore and nevis aren't really that far from each other, but if you were based near either, there is plenty of other stuff to do as well, if there wasn't any snow (and there hasn't been much in recent years). my preference would always be aviemore though...

I went a few times to Avimore and loved it . Apart from coming the entire way down the white lady run on my bum . Liked the area and the people and not far to go to do other things. Lovely places to eat and drink .

I'm a Scot and I wouldn't recommend Scotland for a planned trip, unless your kids and you can take the disappointment of bad conditions and poor snow if it happens. I went to the nevis range before I had junior, but with kids scottish skiing is limited, very cold and damp and expensive. Its also rather dangerous, as there tends to be limited slopes open, making runs really busy. Food is mediocre and expensive. Aviemore would be the only one to consider and only then if you can afford to stay in a good hotel with other things to do, like a pool. I'd prefer to go to france, and its probably just as cheap, if not cheaper and a whole lot nicer. Sorry!
