I have been to Bansko for a short trip(for work) and it looked like fun and reasonably priced too. I would say that if you are bringing dc's then it is a good option as it is so much cheaper than other resorts.

I've been for a beach holiday in Bulgaria and met someone who had been skiing. Can really recommend the only thing to keep in mind is that there's a big difference in the range of hotels and I would strongly recommend that you stay 4* or above.

People are lovely, can't do enough for you and we had a great time. In the beach resort we stayed at though there were a lot of very young children begging and they do still have dancing bears although the resorts are actively encouraging people not to give money as they are trying to wipe it out..

DP and I learned to ski in Borovets. Absolutely loved it. I guess, compared to fancy schmancy French ski resorts it is a bit basic (shabby, even) but we're not fancy schmancy people and we LOVED it. Hot wine out of chipped mugs. Funny igloos selling sausages. Mashed spuds on the menu every night. Brilliant instructors - friendly and good at teaching. We got smashed with our instructor and some Russians on our last night - all very welcoming, despite absolute language barriers. Would thoroughly recommend it with the provisos...

  1. Prob not great for accomplished skiers.
  2. Not for you if you're fancy schmancy.
    You save a bundle.
And, we took time to explore Sophia on our last day and loved that too - beautiful city with gorgeous churches and interesting architecture.

Snow reliability may be a problem otherwise supposed to be good value.

We learnt there and enjoyed it(but not the food), but I don't think I'd want to take the children there.

I think if you look around at getting fights and accomodation separately you can also save money this way.
