Come talk to me about Hinterglemm

Please? Have just booked via Kinderhotels (Ellmauhof - plenty of horse riding indoors for when littles get too cold to play in the snow) and would like to know what's what there... I'll take the bad as well as the good. It's the first time I've persuaded H to go ski-ing (so he needs lessons), but I want everything to be perfect so he'll go again!

I've never been to Hinterglemm, but I would get your DH a 'learn to ski in a day' course at your local UK slope. He'll be familiar with the equipment, feel really proud of himself and the kids will be able to ask for a bit of help ( which they'll do whether he can ski or not, but it's nice to be able to!). Hope you all have a terrific time - i am giving serious thought to austria next year.

Sadly we don't have a slope for miles - I'll pre-book him a lesson once we get there, though, as I think dry ski slopes might put him off. He did ski once for a week about 25 years ago, but he really needs to brush up! Kinderhotels have kids lessons and Magic Carpet so they don't have to brave the lifts so should be ideal!

Sorry, have come to this very late! Went to Hinterglemm in 2008 with DS (then 5.5). We loved it, must add we were right by the ski school & nursery slope http://www.unterschwarzach.at/de/startseite/. Excellent skiing (I don't do much except X-country these days), brilliant ski school and daily floodlit (free) tubing! Enjoy!!

Just re-read my post. To be more positive, yes it's an excellent resort, great for families. The ski school www.skischule.com/html/hollaendisch/kinderkurse.html is excellent:)

Thank you! I'm really excited! Not sure how the 3yo is going to take to ski-ing, but it's fab that the ski school is good. We are going in half term and I am slightly bricking it that the place will be heaving and full of queues for everything. Any idea if this is so?

You will be fine! The Austrian school holidays rotate around the regions (i.e. not whole country at one time), the ones that could have affected you are Vienna (2-9 feb) and Salzburgerland (9-16 feb).

I went to that hotel in the summer...absolutely gorgeous! We had an amazing room with 2 bunk room and main room. MASSIVE bathroom. Scenery was lovely and we do ski, thought about going in the winter so do report back and let me know what it was like. We went up in the cable cars and saw lots of slopes etc - was a bit weird with no snow but very nice all the same. There is a 'thing' at the end of the valley for kids which was quite fun - big climbing thing - not sure it'll be open in the winter - do you fancy a death slide across the valley?!!
The food was also amazing and loads of it - free drinks for the kids.
lapsedorienteerer - could you ski from the door? Was it to the left of the hotel then up on a drag? or did you get a bus to the chair?/ walk?

AnnMumsnet - it is/was ski to door stuff (from the 3-4 beginner drag lifts) or very short schuss from both gondolas. Between "Snowly Land" (ski school) and beginner drag lifts. Right beside the floodlit night time piste and free snow tubing which DS loved.

thanks lapse - really hard to imagine - the cables seemed quite a distance away when not on skis...! Suppose its like being on a bike vs not - you can get a lot further.

We've stayed at several Kinderhotels both in summer and winter and have loved every time, especially as the kids were younger. Very child friendly, excellent food, spa/pool and great childcare .

We stayed there two years in a row in summer - it is fantastic but BE WARNED - I put on two kilos due to the excellent food... We were considering going back for winter but there is no riding out in the snow apparently.

Have a fab time and let me know what is was like.

Thanks - I am really excited now! I'll report back for you. I think I was having a wobble as I really want this holiday to work so we can go again! We went to another Kinderhotel (Alpenrose) 2 summers ago and while everything was great, I think we stayed a bit too long and didn't have enough to do. Winter should be much better tho. The food is fab, isn't it? Off to read the review...
