Is this new? Why has it been added? What does it do??

<scared by change> grin

StickEmUp Thu 12-Sep-13 19:28:39

Where?

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:31:21

Under the reply box before the preview/post buttons

StickEmUp Thu 12-Sep-13 19:32:46

Oh i dont have that!

CinnabarRed Thu 12-Sep-13 19:33:31

I do. To encourage sock puppets?

Sparklingbrook Thu 12-Sep-13 19:33:34

That sounds a bit sockpuppety.

Tee2072 Thu 12-Sep-13 19:33:34

It's only on the mobile site and it's to make it easier to change between names.

TheProsAndConsOfHitchhiking Thu 12-Sep-13 19:33:37

I dont have that shock

GetStuffezd Thu 12-Sep-13 19:33:41

I don't have this either!

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:34:30

Omg, it allows you to use name changes you have had.

Is it just me that thinks that makes it a bit easy to cause trouble? Why else would you need a quick switch option permanently available?

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:35:09

Yes sock puppet is what I was thinking!

BrianTheMole Thu 12-Sep-13 19:35:12

Thats weird, I'm going to give it a go!

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:36:38

I was going to then realised I would out myself grin

Rooners Thu 12-Sep-13 19:37:03

Ooh! <rubs thighs>

BrianTheMole Thu 12-Sep-13 19:37:39

Think it has to be a name you already had in the past. You cant just choose any random name.

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:38:28

Maybe I shouldn't have pointed it out!

Seriously though, what is the reason for it? I assume it isn't really a special concession to trolls?

BrianTheMole Thu 12-Sep-13 19:38:33

Ha, yeah, a bit slow on that. I'm not using my old names either.

StickEmUp Thu 12-Sep-13 19:38:51

Testing

StickEmUp Thu 12-Sep-13 19:39:16

I think it would be useful

Sparklingbrook Thu 12-Sep-13 19:39:45

So why are mobile users special?

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:40:44

Yes Brian but you can go register your troll sock puppet new name then flick between them every post. What good can come from this?

<considers a won't somebody think of the children wail>

StickEmUp Thu 12-Sep-13 19:41:40

Mobile! Haha

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:42:15

Maybe hq know trolls can't use smart phones so they think the mobile site is safe?

BrianTheMole Thu 12-Sep-13 19:42:26

Thats dreadful!
goes off to register new sock puppet name

grin

Just checking - no, can't see it on an iPad.

Screwfox Thu 12-Sep-13 19:43:17

i have been on here for 10 years _ i have had almost 400 nicknames

I know, I know

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:43:57

grin I am tempted to as well - obviously only for the purpose of this thread honest

SPBisResisting Thu 12-Sep-13 19:43:58

well in fairness it only allows you to do what you can already do without going through all the faff of changing your permanent name.
I think it's a good idea.
Apart from the one time I tried to use it it didn't work.
That said, it would be better if it was a drop down box containing all your names.

Octopussocktopus Thu 12-Sep-13 19:44:14

I'm giving it a try in safety here
Trying a name I've just made up - no I has to be a name you've owned before

DollyTwat Thu 12-Sep-13 19:44:46

That's pretty cool actually
Has to be a name you've registered

Screwfox Thu 12-Sep-13 19:45:04

bugger its gone now

MrRogerMashitter Thu 12-Sep-13 19:45:21

Won't anybody think of the children <wrings hands>

DollyTwat Thu 12-Sep-13 19:45:21

Shit!
Remember it doesn't stay on that name!

SPBisResisting Thu 12-Sep-13 19:45:21

Oh I didn't realise it wasn't on the normal site, how odd

Screwfox Thu 12-Sep-13 19:45:31

oh its only on the phone? great
I might wheel out a few classics

BrianTheMole Thu 12-Sep-13 19:47:26

i have been on here for 10 years _ i have had almost 400 nicknames

shock

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:47:30

It is cool and clever but I don't see what reason it was added for, surely the only people who need to flick about are trolls aren't they? Most of us nc permanently, for a season or for a personal thread. Surely the odd personal thread from a regular isn't worth a whole new clever tick box?

perar6ua Thu 12-Sep-13 19:48:17

Ooh...

SPBisResisting Thu 12-Sep-13 19:49:48

Yes but if you're NC for a personal thread you tend to want to be back to your normal name when you post on the "what's for dinner" thread

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:50:01

I am glad someone else is thinking of the children! I get the feeling I may have unleashed a monster grin

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:51:27

I agree spb but is that a huge enough issue to warrant such dangerous changes?

<I may be feeling slightly dramatic )

belatedmaybe Thu 12-Sep-13 19:53:04

Ooh ok anyone who has op highlighted through the thread - does my sock puppet also high light?

Screwfox Thu 12-Sep-13 19:54:08

i KNOW
a lot were fun ones -( or they must have been funny at the time )

ocasionally I read an old thread and half way through realise i am the OP after all

ElkiesBrook Thu 12-Sep-13 19:54:23

Like this you mean?

Screwfox Thu 12-Sep-13 19:54:36

im going to find my phone later and try out some VINTAGE ones grin

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 19:55:52

Do any of you have op posts highlighted?

SPBisResisting Thu 12-Sep-13 19:56:13

But you have to go n and set up all the name changes anyway. So it's not really that different I don't think. It's just that if I want to change back to JenniferAnistonsNasalHair (I definitely ha something like that) I can do it easily enough.

BrianTheSockPuppet Thu 12-Sep-13 19:56:24

Testing

SPBisResisting Thu 12-Sep-13 19:56:33

yes

SPBisResisting Thu 12-Sep-13 19:56:54

And only "Viperslast"'s are highlighted

BrianTheMole Thu 12-Sep-13 19:57:00

Testing

BrianTheMole Thu 12-Sep-13 19:57:28

Yay

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 20:00:22

Yes but with this you can use different names every post making sock puppetry a piece of proverbial. Whereas before (on the mobile site) you had to switch to desktop, log in, change name, log changes, switch back....

Tee2072 Thu 12-Sep-13 20:00:58

Only the nickname posted by the OP is highlighted. If you name change in the middle of the thread no one will know.

As SPB said, it just makes it easier to name change for a short time. Nothing has been added that wasn't there before.

I assume it will roll out across the entire site soon.

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 20:01:36

Ah so if only op posts are highlighted then the op can join in the fun also mess about

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 20:02:54

No nothing more than a short cut, I just think the short cut enables naughtiness more than anything else?

Portofino Thu 12-Sep-13 20:05:21

I can't think of any good reason why you would name change mid thread.

Portofino Thu 12-Sep-13 20:06:56

Well maybe for comedic purpose, but it is an invitation for sock puppets. Many trolls have a few ids which they use to build up an innocent posting history.

Tee2072 Thu 12-Sep-13 20:06:57

It's not so you can name change mid thread.

It's so you can decide which name to use for a thread. So if you're reading something and you want to post something delicate you can use your 'I'm being delicate' name change.

I'm happy with this, and would like it on the main site too. I'm quite public in this name on here, so I avoid Relationships type threads in this name. And sometimes I'm aching to be a bit snippy but I don't because I know I'm not as anonymous as I sometimes feel!

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 20:11:45

I agree porto. Tee if that's the case why does it only last one post? Surely it should "stick" for that thread?

ICod Thu 12-Sep-13 20:12:53

Hello there

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 20:14:22

Travlin, isn't that a bad thing though? If posters can leave behind their usual reasonable persona in order to be snippy (or confrontational or just plain nasty) with minimal effort?

Imnotinterestedinyourkids Thu 12-Sep-13 20:16:02

Hello

Karlwrenbury Thu 12-Sep-13 20:18:59

Hello

Screwfox Thu 12-Sep-13 20:20:12

And hello

SmileyVirus Thu 12-Sep-13 20:22:52

Hello there.

BOF Thu 12-Sep-13 20:23:46

Excellent nickname, Smiley grin

AnneUulmelmahay Thu 12-Sep-13 20:35:46

Sheesh I cannae remember even one percent of all my names on here. 400? Pah Screwy I speet on 400 <hawks>

Tee2072 Thu 12-Sep-13 20:52:35

I haven't tried it. Does it not stick? Then I have no idea.

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 21:06:33

No only lasts one post. confused

Sparklingbrook Thu 12-Sep-13 21:07:28

Just one post? Oh blimey, you could get yourself into all sorts of problems.

BOF Thu 12-Sep-13 21:08:33

That truly is a socky's charter. But I love it when they fuck up.

viperslast Thu 12-Sep-13 21:10:20

Ucm being the classic cautionary tale!

Tee2072 Thu 12-Sep-13 21:10:51

Okay, then it's a bad idea. I agree.

Then again, they may still be working on it since it's not across all the sites yet.

viperslast Fri 13-Sep-13 09:49:41

Go on HQ tell us what it's for grin

RowanMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 13-Sep-13 10:14:23

Hello hello

Yes, this was done because namechanging on the mobile site was a right faff - and as more and more of you are using the mobile site, we wanted to improve your user experience <twiddles glasses>

Posters are allowed to namechange on Mumsnet - mid-thread if they like; this has always been the case. What's not allowed is using the namechange facility to mislead - that is, to back yourself up as though you were two completely separate posters, or 'talk' to yourself (unless it's obviously a joke), etc.

Without giving too much away, we definitely have Ways of Knowing that posters are namechanging on threads. So if you suspect someone is namechanging to mislead, please report the thread to us and we'll get on it.

<faints at all the namechangers on this thread>

As to the just-for-one-post thing - we'll come back to you on that one

I don't want to whinge about a bad online date in this profile though!

ModeratelyObvious Fri 13-Sep-13 10:44:26

I think it's brilliant Rowan, thank you flowers

<a warning before you post again ie "you have already posted under another name on this thread, are you sure?" would be really super dandy. Though possibly a coding House of Horror>

Surely it shows you as "pink" or whatever colour as the OP no matter what NN you use. So a thread full of sock puppets would be obvious

ModeratelyObvious Fri 13-Sep-13 11:34:00

No, posts aren't coloured if the OP changes name, giraffes, never have been.

Tee2072 Fri 13-Sep-13 12:53:56

There would be very little point in name changing if that were the case, giraffes my lovely.

Only the original nick name is highlighted.

Blatherskite Fri 13-Sep-13 13:13:31

Why do I not have this?

nickelbabe Fri 13-Sep-13 13:15:57

I like the idea.

It's such a faff when you want to post under another name and have to go through registration etc to do so.

nickelbabe Fri 13-Sep-13 13:16:55

"So if you suspect someone is namechanging to mislead, please report the thread to us and we'll get on it."

obviously this rule doesn't count if it's all for a laff, does it?
when everyone is aware this is happening smile

Sparklingbrook Fri 13-Sep-13 13:18:42

I never post under another name. I want to now. grin But then i wouldn't be me.

IAmNotTeeAtAll Fri 13-Sep-13 17:40:15

Testing

Tee2072 Fri 13-Sep-13 17:40:35

Cool

viperslast Fri 13-Sep-13 21:15:30

Thanks Rowan. It is much easier than it used to be, mainly because I can never get it to switch back to mobile! You do still need to faff to get the name change set up... wink
