I think this is so important, and something Mumsnet is fantastic at, but for some reason, it is not getting enough attention. I think it would really help, even if it was only for a week or something!

Why not 2shoes?

i Have no problem with the petition.
But if it is this gets a sticky then where will it stop. there are lots of good petitions mentioned on here all the time will they all get a sticky?

Report
Boogalooblue · 07/11/2007 22:06

Maybe then we could have a petition section?

It just seemed and incredibly abrupt post, no explanation just being rude to Beenleigh

Perhaps the problem is more one of placement - lots of people ignore the In The News topic. You might find it gets notices more if you start a new thread in Chat.

But I'm with 2shoes on the sticky - if every worthwhile cause or important thread was given a sticky, the site would be full of them. And I hate stickies - would probably click Ignore without even reading it.

Lots of people have clicked to ignore the sticky threads, so it would be missed by many.

Better to have a petitions topic, as suggested below.

Boogalooblue why rude? I said please.
Sorry but I don't come on here to sign petitions. And I don't understand the sticky system where one thread is deemed more important than others.
Ok I can hide it. but Beenleigh can bump the thread if she feels strongly about.
and Beenleigh I wasn't being rude to you.

Report
mamazon · 07/11/2007 22:15

i came on to say please dont as well.
don't see why that would be deemed as rude.

i dont agree with the petition anyway but even if i did i would rather be asked politely rather than having it rammed down my throat each time i opened the talk section.

Hi there
Just to let you know we've seen this but it's late so we'll probably take another look in the morning.
Thanks

I still think it would be good to have this on a sticky because imo the more people who see it the better, and in even that mn towers decide it's a good idea, then I don;t suppose it will be for long.
Longmeg, I started a thread about this in chat the other day, bumped it several times and it was completely fruitless. Someone told me that perhaps it was ignored because it was too serious a thread to start in chat.
I would happily sit and post it in every topic, but am afraid it will just piss people off.
2shoes, imo this is an unbelievably important petition, and is particularly important to mumsnet where each and every one of us, as parents, would be able to understand at least a little, the absolute horror of losing a newborn baby.
Mamazon, just wondering why you don't agree with the petition

because whils i understand the horrific hurt this woman must be feeling right now at the thought of losing a child, i am a social worker and like to think my proffession is still able to do its job properly.

i still have enough faith in it to trust that those who are in posession of the FULL FACTS know what they are doing.

i trust that not only must 3 or 4 SW's have been involved with making this decision, they h ave gone on the word of a meidcal expert adn also a judge have all decided that there is enough evedence to indicate potential harm to her child.

I would not like a petition made by people who are not aware of teh whole case, who have formed their opinion based on information gleened from the mother alone, to have any influence on an essentially life determining decision.

but i gave my opinions, both proffessional and personal on teh other thread and dont really want to go through it all again

I haven't posted on the thread. but I will not sign a petition unless I know the facts.
I admire you for caring and pushing the petition. but where does it end. If everytime someone deems a thread important(and I am sure this one is) they will want a sticky. what is wrong with good old fasioned bumping.
I think stickys should just be for mn threads.

OK, I didn't see what you wrote. I understand you don;t really want to get drawn in to it again, but feel compelled to answer you.

You're absolutely right, that they have gone on the word of a medical expert; a paediatrician that has never met her. Of course professionals in your position are able to do their jobs properly, but the problem is, sometimes mistakes are made, and this sadly is one of those terrible, tragic mistakes.

mamazon have you seen the gmtv link?

Fran has said quite clearly that she is happy for SS to discuss the case in public. They have refused to do so.

I feel rather shocked that you appear to have the attitude of "my profession right or wrong". Even most catholics admit that some catholic priests abuse(d) children. How strange that you should have such faith in your profession, given that Sally Clarke, Angela Cannings and Trupti Patel exist.

I appreciate that you don't want to discuss this again, but please look at the GMTV link on the other thread. It is extremely thought-provoking.

i dont doubt that there may well be many aspects of this case that could be cause for deabte.

but i dont feel that i childs welfare is a place for people presure. it should be left to professionals to make informed decisions.

I think its very good of you all to care so deeply about a woman you do not know.

I dont think that my proffession is always right, i read of situations that make me angry just as well as you all do. but i also know how many hoops must have been jumped through for a SW to get this case to court, not to mention convimcing a judge to agree to placing an unborn child into care

mamazon, fran has given the SS dept permission to talk about how and why they arrived at their decision.

They are hiding behind the pretence that they are not allowed to.

They are allowed to, if she gives them permission.

She has done.

But they still refuse to be open about why they have taken this decision. They don't have the excuse that this is in the interests of the child, because Molly hasn't yet been born and as soon as she is, she will be anonymous and if they get their way, renamed anyway.

It is reasonable to suspect that they are refusing to be open about this decision, because it would not stand up to public scrutiny.

I cannot believe that anyone in a democracy thinks unaccountable professionals should be left to make "informed decisions" without scrutiny.

That is simply dangerous. If that were rigidly stuck to, the Birmingham Six, the Guildford Four, Angela Cannings etc., would all still be in prison. Because of informed decisions made by professionals.

Re stickies, I have to say I think this is a least as important as the Christmas thread

it doesnthave to stand up to public scrutiny. in our country such decisions are made by a judge not public opinion.

she has given her permission to talk but their duty is to the baby as well. thebaby will be placed in their care and they are not allowed to discuss any matter pertaining to that child.

i know i am vastly outnumbered in this opinion which is why i didnt want to get drawn into a discussion on here.

my opposition to the sticky was not based on my decision not to sign the petition at all.
if it had been a petition for free chocolate i still wouldnt want it to be made sticky
