I think a problem that will arise from the IGNORE option is that, whenever you wade in with a different viewpoint from the OP (or other poster), you're going to get ... 'Well, you can always ignore, you know.'

It's happened on a couple of threads already.

I also think that, if you've made a prat of yourself on a thread, it would be all too easy to click the IGNORE option, and think no more about it.

Face the music, I say

I think it's good - there are often threads I don't want to see (especially when eating) like 'sorry TMI but green slimy poo...' or 'projectile vomiting..'

its them appearing at the end of the thread title on active convos i think looks bad..too i am only ignoring classifieds because i like the diuversity i think it's an essential bit of mn tho too

Ignore is sad. It means we will never again have the cosy experience of knowing that we are all looking at more-or-less the same talk board. We are each in our own private customised space.

It's like the loss of the communial experience that television used to be -- knowing that the whole nation was sat in front of Morecambe & Wise together, etc

Apologies for 'communial'

exactly..as well as having the word ignore repeated fifty times on a page is very negative

We won't be able to point out amusing thread juxtapositions anymore

Report
Katymac · 27/10/2007 18:33

Also if you ignore because you can't deal atm (eg while eating) can you unignor later?

Report
TheEvilDediderata · 27/10/2007 18:34

God, you've hit the nail on the head there, Shaun.

It does epitomize everything that's wrong with modern society. This disassociation, the ivory towers, this judgy, judgy, so I shall ignore ye, and all the rest of the blah-di-blah.

ScaryScienceT · 27/10/2007 18:37

On the face of it, it is sad to ignore certain topics, but the site is so big that you need some way of making it manageable.

I don't think my ignored threads are bad threads, but just ones that I have no interest in reading at this stage in my life, nor any that I could possibly contribute to.

Report
policywonk · 27/10/2007 18:37

I agree with Shaun, but nevertheless I am ignoring with abandon, because I am constitutionally unable to take the long view. Never again will I have to see that 'Scuttlebugger' thread.

Report
WideWebWitch · 27/10/2007 18:39

I am ignoring with abandon too because I am absolutely not interested in sleep or conception or potty training or for sale or all sorts and it's lovely not to even see them

the word
IGNORE

It's over democratisation. It gives the individual too much power at the expense of the Mumsnet community in general.

People should be able to see what's in active convos and which topics are kicking off.

Report
ShaunOfTheThread · 27/10/2007 18:41

Yes, it is. And it's kind of humiliating, too, when you start a thread and the option to 'ignore' you is slapped right next to it.

Report
francagoestohollywood · 27/10/2007 18:45

I agree.

Report
Katymac · 27/10/2007 18:45

Would 'hide' be better?

I lose topics because there are some I can't deal with (eg I struggle dealing with/talking/thinking about my miscarriages.....I cannot cope with other peoples - sorry but I really can't)

I haven't (yet) lost individual threads

Report
TheEvilDediderata · 27/10/2007 18:51

Ah, but WWW, what you're talking about is changing your active convo's so that certain topics don't come up.

That's fair enough, and I've done it myself.

Buy, Sell, Swap and anything to do with babies are no longer part of my screen.

What Zip is on about is the IGNORE option at the end of every OP.

The world is divisive enough (increasingly so despite, and perhaps because, of the best efforts of political correctness), and I don't think it helps, to choose to ignore an active thread that you have signed up for.

ShaunOfTheThread · 27/10/2007 18:54

"I am constitutionally unable to take the long view"

Policywonk, that is why we need the Leviathan: we need mumsnet to impose our long-term collective and interests by eliminating the ignore option.

Report
Katymac · 27/10/2007 18:55

Would it be better to have a 'hide' in the thread next to the 'watch'??

I love the fact that we are all whinging about this

I don't like it either and I asked for it in the first place as i recall

Report
FrannyandZooey · 27/10/2007 19:23

(sorry, didn't mean to suggest that I was the one to think of it, I thought I was at the time, but I think LL and probably several others had come up with it previously)
