because its supposed to be a community I guess? because they want us back?
Did you notice how Hamleys stopped publicising all night visits by michael jackson a few years back? If poeple are generalyy offended in any way (eg nestle) by what they associate with your brand its a big negative for the brand itself

Or maybe its nothing to do with that, maybe its jusr coz MN are nce poele? (recalling the horrid amazon books a while back)

I agree re david guest, it seems that there is some kind of list, and there are mumsnetters who say "milupa! how very ...."

"sky?.....that is just disgusting"

it seems that there are ethics about these thngs which the mumsnet population get to have an opinion on, which i don't understand becuase surely it is all money tot he mumsnet teach ( pay rise tech?)

Puts commercial thinking cap on .......

um let me see, because if it's commercial stuff you know and approve of you are not really a good target market as you probably already buy their products.

admittedly if it's stuff MN'ers post about in strongly negative terms then it's unlikely to gain new customers either but remember loads of less confident people lurk, reading threads but never posting and what do we know about their shopping preferences/tolerances ? Not a thing, because they don't post to inform us that they are quite likely to buy a "lunchable" and are pleased to see the fat and salt content has been lowered so will buy them more often.

Because there's no rule that says that you just have to sit back and keep your opinions to yourself. I dont think dictation as such is going on, but why sit and take what you find to be offensive?

FiveFingeredFiend · 03/05/2007 13:56

yes lazyline i dispute not what you are saying.

Rather i am saying there is something more organised than that. And even more, MNHQ take notice when it comes to particular advertizers!

We have Nortons AV, and I don't get any ads, feel quite left out sometimes.

Thinking about it, FFF, I realise that if MN Towers are going to give in to general concensus on advertisers so regularly, then maybe they should be thinking more about what advertisers they accept in the first place?

Hi there,
Posted on this a few days ago, so will answer here:

Well the truth is we ask because a) we don't want to upset or alienate folks b) though we are a business and hoping to be a profitable one, we also genuinely wish to be an "ethical" business and sometimes we are genuinely in two minds about advertisers. A good debate often clarifies both of these issues for us as it has in the past with formula milk.

Currently we don't allow ads for formula milk, Nestle, Macdonalds, plastic surgery types, political parties, porn sites and a few red-top newspapers. If you think there's any we should add to that list let us know who and why.

Best,
MNHQ

I was amazed at this, when i cam across the Nestle debate the other day.
Surely the mn site is a public on and as such, everyone has differing ideas/morals etc, and are capable of making the choice wether to buy a product/service advertised.
I could not believe that MN have taken this decision, I thought it was a wind up of some sort.

as an example, I personlly don't buy factory farmed chicken, but would not give a toss if a Bernard Mathhews ad appeared! its ridiculous. polictical correctness imho

Sherlock - Ah is that (Norton) why I don't see any of these ads? I was feeling quite left out, though I can still see the lunchables one - perhaps even a software package finds them indigestible?

LazyLine · 03/05/2007 18:11

Lilymolly, how exactly is it PC?

Report
PeachyChocolateEClair · 03/05/2007 18:48

Surely MN run (and take more than enough flack!) the site and get to choose? I personally support the ban on Nestle ads- in fact I thinks its an amazing thing for them to do.

What i don't get is poeple joining then questioning the site- surely if you join you take it the way it is?

PC doesn't automatically mean bad. Thats just a warped view. PC can mean rather excellent beliefs too- its used as such a catch all it has become utterly meaningless!

But wanting to be an ethical business means certain choices - and why would we not want Mumsnet owners to choose to be ethical?

They do it not solely because they want to avoid offending site users, but because they prefer to avoid taking money from people they regard as having poor ethical values.

I don't see anything wrong with that at all!

Just as someone would not enter into business with a factory farmer, and so avoids buying their chickens, Mumsnet Towers avoids entering into business with (among others) Nestle.

lillymolly - if people were really that reasonable and that capable of making informed choices, why do companies spend so much money on advertising? and why does anyone buy ipods?

SenoraPostrophe · 03/05/2007 19:38

and as peachy says, pc seems to have changed it's meaning to "whatever I disagree with". but I have ranted about that before.
