Hi all,

We’ve sorted quite a few of the glitches raised by you Thanks on the mobile site. Please do go and take another look and let us know any further thoughts.

We have the answers to your mobile related FAQs over here, if there is anything else you would like to know, please post below.

There’s been a bit of negative feedback about the fixed ad at the top of the site so we’d like to test a new approach this week - no fixed at at the top but a returning in-text ad (every 6 posts) as you scroll down the page (something we’ve seen on other sites like the Guardian)

Hopefully this will also be a preferable solution for those who’ve felt the pages are too uniform or too white. As ever, please let us know what you think.

Sounds interesting, but please do bear in mind that we are tapping the screen to move, so ideally we won't have to scroll more than one full 'flick' with our fingers to get past the ad, or I can imagine we will all end up clicking on them a lot?!

I preferred the ad always at the top - sorry....

Thanks PinkAndBlueBedtimeBears, every six posts is our current estimate based on testing and average screen size but as ever we need to try it out and see. One person's full flick could be another's erm half scroll?

that reply made me laugh much more than it should have Grin

The ads are perfect, so so so much better! One thing, is there anyway of giving them an outline? Some of them are okay because they are coloured, but there is one ATM which is white with dark writing, which obviously blends into the other posts, took me a min to realise why it wasn't a relevant response to the thread! Also, with the post on the other thread with regards to my active button- ignore it! It was at the exact time you turned off the top ads and integrated them into posts, I assume that was the problem!!!!

Much prefer the ads not being at the top . Grin

Oh that is brilliant! So much better. I am a major lurker and rare poster, but had stopped using my phone so much to use the site as the ad was really annoying me (iPhone 5, safari, iOS 7), but this really works for me. I've scrolled through a few pages and haven't hit the ad by accident and if I'm reading longer posts can scroll and adjust the page so the ad is off the screen and doesn't bother me.

I'm much happier with that position!

Seems better so far. It's funny, you've made so many changes it almost looks like the old site now Grin Now if we could just go to Active and TIO with one tap rather than two it'd be almost perfect! Or not that much different to how it was

I keep clicking through the ads at the bottom when I try to hit the 'active' or 'I'm on' links. Can anything be done about that?

Also, slightly off topic, but how can I view all replies on the new mobile version? (rather than individual pages) and why is the OP no longer repeated at the top of each page?

Wink Glad it tickled you PinkAndBlueBedtimeBears!

And thank you for your thoughts on the ads. That's a fair point about the outline, we'll have a think about that.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine no need to be sorry at all! It's good to know your preference, thank you Smile

I hate the ads inbetween threads, I keep accidently tapping them and I also think that when its a thread about a sensitive subject ie miscarriage its completely inappropriate to have a flashing advert for fostering or pregnancy vitamins, which ive just seen. At least when its at the top or bottom you can ignore them.

Sorry to hear that ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged, we've tried quite hard to ensure the buttons were big enough to avoid accidentally tapping elsewhere but we appreciate that might not be right for everyone.

View all replies is something we're working on and will be introduced in the near future. We're also considering how to include the OP at the top of the page without encroaching on space too much. We'll keep you posted Smile

Hello smilingthroughgrittedteeth thank you for giving us your thoughts.

Some of our adverts come from a third party and in those cases we aren't always able to manage exactly what does and doesn't get shown ahead of time.

We're sorry if you've been upset by any inappropriate ads and we'll remove from sensitive topics asap.

Thanks

I hate them in the threads, really distracting when they move to, whilst they never bothered me at the top!

TeenyfTroon · 02/09/2014 12:49

I much prefer the ads in between posts, though if they're every 6 posts it might be worse in threads where responses tend to be short and fast. I HATED the ads at the top as the tiny post area was my main dislike on new mobile site.

Where do we put general observations / complaints / suggestions now when they don't fit into ads comments or mobile problems? Cos I really like the idea of the disappearing-but-available-when-needed blue bar. And think it would be even better for DPs.

I prefer them in the middle of the thread, but every 6 messages seems like overkill ?

Report
Lumineer · 02/09/2014 13:23

I prefer them in the threads, but they look a bit amateur hour. They must be location specific and all the Aussie ones are just plain text and blend in.

It might be the advertisers' issue but it is aesthetically odd.

I agree that every 6 posts is a bit rich, but far prefer them in the posts rather than at the top. Has made a big improvement to the previously cluttered screen.

Lumineer that screenshot shows a typical ad from Google which I'm afraid we don't handle the styling for.

I prefer the new approach, ie not having the ad stuck at the top of the screen taking up space and generally being annoying.

I don't like scrolling ads anywhere, tbh. They make me grumpy.

I like the adverts at the top and at the bottom.

i don't like them stuck to ttge top of my sscreen (so they don't disappear when i scroll but move with my scrollong)

having them every 6 posts is awful !!
they're just constantly there!

and as they also move, it's bloody dreadful!

as someone else said - bad bad idea in sensitive threads as it really interrupts the flow. (and looks really tactless)

why did 6 get agreed? based on scrolling?
not good.
if they were surrounded by an obvious box, then maybe every 20 would be better, and certainly central so they can't be accidentally tapped when scrolling down.
but the box they're in now is bad - they just stick in the thread.
if you're going to put them there, then they need at least 2 blank (text depth) lines above and below.

Hi there nickelbabe, thank you for popping on to give your thoughts Thanks

We're addressing the sensitive topics issue right now.

6 posts is what we found to be a reasonable average on full screen height and scroll but we're open to feedback to try to get this right.

We'll have a think about the box that frames them with a view to try to balance making it obvious they're advertisements yet also not taking up more room than absolutely necessary.
