Retirement

Is there a section of the site that deals with retirement? We are all going to face it at some point and it is a major rite of passage but yet it doesn't get much of a mention that I can find.

Any chance of setting it up?

Thanks for suggesting this PuddingandPie1 - it'd be interesting to see what other people think of this.

How do people feel about a retirement section? We do have an employment issues topic in the meantime.

I think it's a great idea :-)
Plenty of Mumsnetters aged 55 +

I think that it would be nice to have a retirement section - if it doesn't work it could always be deleted or merged.

How about it HQ?

Thanks Pudding - just waiting to see whether there's a lot of call for it from other MNers.

I think its a great idea being one of the over 55's, especially with the pension reforms next year.

Would be good for the younger folk to look at to see how it all works for planning ahead too.

It's a yes from me...although at 50 the big R seems a depressing distance away...

Definitely ! Especially if I need to plan now to have any hope of one Grin

I'd like it for planning discussions..

I would like a section. I am retiring to get married (it is a long story but true)!

Yes! Great idea.

Yes. It's a massive life event, but one which is all confusing & shrouded in mystery. Sharing would be great, for the retired & retiring and also for the never-gonna-happen-to-me brigade.

It will also give me a platform to moan about media portrayals of over-55s Grin

Sounds like a v good idea. Retirement for me is a long way off but is something I'm paying close attention to. When I left university, I was told I could retire at 60 with state as well as employment pension. That has now increased to 67 for state pension.

Pensions are a minefield and there will be lots of mumsnetters who have very real concerns over their financial independence and stability in the future.

Please yes. Could have loads of discussion re minefield of women's pensions ....

I would welcome it. I am 52 but would like to look at the options of flexible retirement.

Another one here voting for a retirement thread. Not old enough or quite in the mindset to join Gransnet (plus am not a Gran) but facing retirement in a couple of years and would like to share stuff. Pensions. Managing on less money. What we do with our time. The next phase of our lives. Thank you.

Fab idea. I'm no where near retirement age but friends of mine are already planning ahead (pensions savings investment for the future etc) yet I just don't have a clue!!

Personally, am really quite nervous about it. I have worked for 40 years now, and although I do have a lot of interests:- local affairs, politics, cooking, gardening, an allotment, cycling, music, the arts, current affairs plus two grown up sons and a husband, I am totally at sea with what giving up work will really mean other than not having to set the alarm clock, and not actually having that work responsibility any more. I love my job, but I am done.
I have done some planning, but, but, as GarlicJuneBlooms says it is literally a massive life event, and one we will all face. The more help and support the better!
What say other people? Plus, thank you Puddingand Pie1 for raising this.

Crumbs, did you expect anyone to say i was a daft idea?

It'll be on the horizon for you, too, and nearly everyone (excepting that lovely lady still working in a pub who had her 100th birthday around Easter)...

OK, far distant horizon for all you MNHQ staff who are still just 21 :)
