allow journos to harvest threads for quotes on the understanding of a mention in the article..as I said just interested that is the regular threads rather than the "media" ones

Not speaking on behalf of MN towers of course - and I don't nick quotes without acknowledgement myself - BUT it's fairly obvious that the internet is open-access so it's incredibly easy just to search, pick, quote - and Mumsnetters are so quotable

then why do they have a copyright message on..and why do people bother to sign up to the media thing if they could start a thread any way?

I'm interested as to how it works , very complicated i imagine

so whatr happens if someone uses a quote from a thread and it's printed in a newspaper and then they want to use it themselves in a book?

Hi Zippitoes - Yes it's our copyright so journalists, if they want to quote directly ie according to one xxx from mumsnet website " blah, blah" legally they need to have permission. There's nothing to stop journos harvesting ideas for stories/ columns etc from mumsnet though - plenty do.
Hope that answers your question.

thanks for the reply, i hadn't really thought about it until i saw the article in the observer yesterday..I think I'd find it quite uncanny to read a direct quote of something i'd said on here in a newspaper article..

DH saw this and remarked on it Z. Could you direct me to the section so that I can retrieve it from the recycling basket please?

p.19 of the main sheet Focus about Private Schools

it is the comment with 101 dalmatians and Jane Austen in it (the attributions in the article are actually the wrong way round..so much for journo accuracy)
