for DS#1 and DD's school? Are they going to be built or not? The ones that all the pupils had a hand in designing. The one that is going to solve all the problems with leaks and draughts in winter, and sweltering heat in summer, and excessive distances to travel between classes, and horrible old toilets and horrendous heating costs.

Is that now gone for a burton? And how can I find out. Anyone know?

Thanks.

It says 'Sample for discussion - PFI' along with DH's school. Two of the other schools in the town have been stopped so should be grateful.

Well if I'm honest I'm not devastated. It's a good school inspite of it's old buildings. But it would have been so wonderful - and so many children will be disappointed.

Oh yes I may be a little less sanguine when the local 'Godly Bigots School for Religious Children' gets fully-funded

SEA - I believe the money for free schools is coming from this budget for refurbishing existing schools.

Perhaps the country would be richer if all our national resources hadn't been sold off in the 80s...

My DD's school is on the list but they have already working on the site so I don't know what is going on. Are they just going to stop and leave part of it as a building site and lay off all the builders? The existing building is awful - cramped and falling apart. A fair amount of the money was raised by the (Tory) council selling off part of the site (which pissed off loads of people), so not all from the government. I feel sick.

i'm tempted to stand outside parliament and protest about this - oh but that's illegal now isn't it

I'd be interested in their logic in deciding which to go ahead with and which should be stopped.

My local school is unaffected but others in our LEA are stopped.

It seems bonkers to go ahead with free schools while slashing at existing school plans.

DS school has sample for discussion against it - what does this mean?

I think that means they've not decided yet SandyisinCaldwell

Can't believe it. This'll affect my ds in a few years. New secondary absolutely desperately required. It was going to be 8 form / year school and even that was about half what is actually required. Words fail me! What are they going to do in 4 years time?

There is one fact that nobody can ignore and that is that there is no money to do this. The alternatives are cutting the funding to schools which would mean larger classes, fewer teachers etc.

As it is there is going to be cuts which are going to mean that many schools will have to think again about their staffing.

You can't blame the current government for this, this is the legacy of 20 years of spending more than we have had nationally and individually and the medicine is very unpalatable.

Report
snorkie · 06/07/2010 00:16

what does 'PFI' mean against a school on the list?

It is a huge set of cuts - where they all to be complete rebuilds or were some minor refurbs?

There is simply no money in the coffers to pay for these schools. It was irresponsible to pay for plans when everyone knew there was no money.

Labour had 13 years to build swanky new schools and they didn't.

Interesting at the consitituencies where these promise for votes schools are located.

The poor children will just have to put up with cold in winter and heat and summer. It's character building!

But there is money for Free Schools? How does that work?
