Any German speakers on here tonight? Just a quick German grammar question for you...

My ds is claiming that he's learnt the following:

"Ich finde das ist genug."

We think it should be either:

"Ich finde, dass das genug ist." or
"Ich finde, das ist genug" - ie with a comma after finde.

But what do we know? He's adamant! It's do with his pocket money being enough.

Any help gratefully received

bumpsen (isn't that something rather rude?)

After a quick scrabble through the CGP revision books, I've told him to put:

"Ich finde das genug."

Das finde ich genug

He can't put the sentence he is using because the 2nd verb is in the wrong place. If there were 2 verbs one would be at the end. Ie: Ich muss in die Schule gehen. Muss is the 2nd idea and then the other verb at the end (ie, gehen).

I know what I am talking about anyway! Sorry I didn't reply earlier as I think you have sorted it out.

The sentence is correct, so the verb doesn't need to go anywhere else, but I am currently pondering whether it needs a comma or not.

Not that it matters now, but it matters to me now IYSWIM!

But "Ich finde das genug" is OK, is it?

Yes.

I'm trying to keep things simple for him - we've already had silly panics over this German test he's got! I can see that "Das finde ich genug" sounds better, though.

Thanks Emkana.

BTW, you put us onto German Centerparcs, and we're off to the one in Bispinger Heide in the summer hols! So thanks a million for that, too

tbh the sentence Ich finde das ist genug sounds best really of the lot, and I doubt very much that the teacher is going to be worried about the comma/no comma situation. You'd probably find that most Germans wouldn't be sure whether a comma is needed there - me included!

x-post - great to hear that, have a lovely time!

Well that is reassuring Just shows how a neurotic mum can screw up a perfectly good understanding of German

I would notice the lack of comma...
But I'm a pedant when it comes to German grammar!
It should have a comma
Ich finde, das ist genug.

As an ex German teacher I would like to stress again though that I would be very happy indeed with such a lovely German sentence, and not worry about the lack of comma.

We could start a very exclusive MN clique for German grammar curmudgeons...

Thanks everyone for your help! Ds would be flattered if he weren't so grumpy about it all He'll feel better when it's over, though.
