Can anyone recommend a small school please?

My 9yo ds is currently attending a school which has only one class per year group. This suits him well and i want to find a secondary school that is similar.

Can anyone suggest/recommend somewhere please? We will move to be near to the school although we live in Bedfordshire at the moment. Thanks.

A secondary with one class per year group? Unlikely.

You will need a very rural area to find such a small school. For example, there are some very small schools in Cumbria.

John Ruskin School, Coniston, for example has 170 pupils (aged 11-16), so that's an average of 34 in each year. I've no idea about the school, so this is not a recommendation, just an idea of where to start looking.

Why do you want such a small school?

Many independent schools are quite small too: is that a possibility for you?

Yes of course, i realise this is unusual, but something smaller than the average school with about 600+ pupils would be good.

Ds is SN but in mainstream school and coping very well but a larger setting (i moved him from a big school in Easter 05) means he finds difficulty in remembering names and social interaction very hard.

Yes, Cumbria is meant to be good - my ex husbands first wife lives there and she says the schools are good.

But sadly independent school is not really an option being a single mum working part time.

Parkside community college is in the centre of Cambridge and is VERY good. It has about 700 on-roll and is 11-16yrs (no 6th form)

Yes, I think I agree. A tiny school is likely to be better for some SEN children, simply because there are fewer students and staff to get to know, and to get to know them.

But I do share some of Chatee's opinion of Cumbria LEA and SEN. (Have you had some recent battles with them Chatee?)
