My DS1 despite doing literally no work achieved a B in the double "additional" science GCSE today (P3 C3 B3) what has he passed because I understand that there is some course work and another exam (P4 C4 B4 I think) in the summer.

Is that year 10 Op?

My dd got her results today for chemistry and physics, she got A and B. biology result later in the year as they did the exam late.

I can't shed any light on what it means as I don't know why they have done it now but have another exam in year 11.

No he's yr 11. He sat "core" science last year and got a B and we were told recently that meant he had science at GCSE and that many schools stop there and offer another subject all together. This as I said is "additional science" theres a course work element that has to be handed in at Easter and another one in June. Want I want to know is do you have to pass all parts
or is this another separate GCSE? I got the impression even the teacher didn't really know apparently its "new" for this year!!

My DD is devastated as she missed a grade C by 3 marks. Do you think it's worth asking for her paper to be re-marked? This is the first paper she has sat out of the 3 papers which make up core science (I think). Or should I not have it re-marked and just wait for her to re-sit paper 1 in June? I am not sure when she is due to sit the other two papers, but I think maybe paper 2 at Easter and paper 3 in June?

Additional science is B2, C2 and P2. Is this what you mean?

I have not heard of B4 etc

Is he studying double award or triple science?

We had results today too - but it's for the 3 separately, so dd's results aren't all the same.

Is it for an exam sat in January? If so, it's probably the same thing, and I will ask dd what proportion it's worth. I have a feeling it's a third, and can also be resat.

Every so often dd also mentions something called ISAs in relation science, as well, which I don't entirely understand.

Yes he sat it in January he's doing double science.
Maybe no B4 etc but definitely 3's in June this year he's just told me two exams but he could be wrong too!! In my day you sat the exams in the summer at the end of yr 11 as does my DS2 this system seems so confusing. Also got geography "ESDM" I didn't even know he sat a geography exam.

B3, C3 and P3 are part of triple science though, not double.

ISA are the controlled coursework element of the science exam.

They need to do one for the core science exam and one for the double science exam.

each is worth a quarter of the final GCSE grade

TOSN I was talking to the teacher at parents evening the other night I don't think he understood it either! He was trying to explain it and when I asked him if you could retake any one part if he got less than a C (thinking primarily of the one he's just got a B in as he hadn't done any work and I assumed he'd fail it Blush) he didn't seem to know.
Why on earth does it have to be so confusing?

Now I'm really confused he's definitely got to do the 3's and and he's not doing triple science!!!

it might be worth asking to see the exam slip and seeing what the exam codes are. that will help work out what he has taken

dd seems to think you can retake - but she could well be wrong!

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 07/03/2013 17:58

you can only retake once more, in June.

Then all module exams are being scrapped and moving to terminal, end of course, one of exams.

Nit ISAs are controlled assessments, effectively - they do experiments and suchlike. One for each science if you are doing separate sciences. I don't know how it works if you are doing combined.

webwiz · 07/03/2013 18:23

Do you know what exam board it is OP?

RussiansOnTheSpree · 07/03/2013 18:23

You can redo ISAs this year for sure. Some of DD1's contemporaries were redoing their biology today.

As far as I know, there are two ways to do 'triple' science

Either Core, Additional, Further each as a standalone GCSE
Or Biology, Chemistry, Physics.

They are the same units but in a different pattern,

So B1, C1, P1=Core
B2, C2, P2 = Additional
B3, C3, p3 = Further
or

B1, B2, B3 = biology
C1, C2, C3 = Chem
P1, P2, P3 = physics

creamteas ah that must be what he's doing. That must be what he's doing.

It looks like its this one OP

Additional science
www.ocr.org.uk/images/82188-specification-accredited.pdf

B3, C3, P3 35% of the GCSE
B4, C4, P4 40% of the GCSE
Controlled assessment 25%

You have to take at least 40% of the qualification in the summer of year 11 so he has the B4, C4 and P4 modules to do then.
