My son is in Year 8 and has just achieved a 6B for an English assessment, writing.
He seemed to think its quite good....is it??

Yes that is good.

Aim is for all students to reach a level 5 by the end of year 9 (kind of meant to mean they should be on track to get a C at GCSE) - a 6b at year 8 means he is working at a level higher than average.

Yay for him.

It should always be taken in the context of where he started from. What was his primary English writing level? The government deems that students shoudl make 2 levels of progress during KS3 (years 7-9) so if he was at level 5 at primary school then he is midway to getting there. If he was level 4 in primary then he's made good progress.

Kritur, he was a level 4 at the end of Primary. So thats really good news.
A special treat is due methinks, though probably not chocolate!
